Question When something breaks down, what do you do?

When an appliance, be it small or large breaks down in your home, do you or dh/so try fixing it before you discard it?

We were at the garbage dump the other day and I was amazed to see what people had thrown out that still worked and worked well. There were computers, vcr's, microwaves, oven toasters and more. The caretaker out there always checks all appliances and when they are in working order, places them in a small shed and you can purchase them for a couple bucks.

Makes me wonder why were such a "throw away" society. Dh always tries fixing things before anything is discarded. Its amazing what a little bit of knowledge can do and how easy some things are to fix.

How about you?

My dh always has a go at fixing things and if he can't do it we work out whether it would be cheaper to get it fixed or buy new.

Cry!, No really, depending on what it is, and how it is broke, I usually just end up throwing it out. I am not handy, and with dh not around right now, things would pile up and my little guy would end up taking it apart. He loves to take things apart. Now if I could just get him to learn how to fix things and put them back together, I would be in great shape.

If anything breaks with the house, I call our warrenty company and they come out and fix it. As a matter of fact, our central air just died yesterday, so I am waiting for them to come out Monday and fix it. I hope they replace it with another model. I am tired of having this one fixed. I think they have come out and fixed something on it every year we have lived here in this house.

We try to fix things. Now that I am a member of our local FREECYCLE.org group, if we couldn't fix it, I would post that we have the item and it doesn't work. There are many people that love tinkering with that kind of thing. This way I am not throwing it out myself.

I am horrible at fixing things! I've heard about some website that helps you with directions on some common household problems...don't suppose anybody knows what that is?

try and fix usually. I mean what's to lose? If we muck it up, it's still broken, but if we fix it, we are $ ahead of the game. Tried to teach the kids to think like that too.

One of the reasons I married my Dh is because he is a smart frugal man. If it's fixable he'll try his best to get it done on his own. He's soooo smart!

Well - first, I usually test out all of my colorful vocabulary!

Seriously, I usually try to fix it.....I'm also involved in my FreeCycle group & we swap "needs some work" things if it's beyond my scope.....
