Default Does anyone have a ventless gas stove used for heating?

We have a ventless propane gas stove with the logs in our family room. It puts out lots of heat, but the problem that I am having is the soot is clinging to everything, the ceilings need washed now, and I notice it sticking to the windows and walls. Besides the fact, that it isn't probably to healthy. It is probably sticking to my family's lungs too. Any comments or advice would be appreciated. Also, by running it saves us tons of $$$$$ on propane.

Have it checked!!!! It should not leave soot on anything! Do you have a carbon monoxide detector? You may have your logs positioned wrong. That was one thing the fireplace shop told me, make sure your logs are not directly in the flame. I bought a fireplace mantle, burner and logs at a yard sale for 75 bucks. Took it to a local shop to have cleaned and checked for leaks. Cost me 25 bucks so with a little paint on the mantle I have over a $1000 fireplace for 100 bucks. The fireplace shop praised at what a deal I got! (it is a big fireplace, came out of a home being remodeled) You also need to have enough room to vent the fireplace. Someone told me in small rooms or mobile homes you have to crack a window. For your familys safety it is best to get it checked.

Is your ventless or vented?? Dh cleans the logs by vacumning it. Should he be doing something else? The stove has a carbon monoide detector safety thingy on it, it will automatically kick off it is put out the c.mono., I will let DH read your post and see about the tips you gave me. Thanks so much. Keep the advice coming.

We have a ventless propane fireplace with logs in our living room. We have never had it soot up anything in the room, although we have never used it for long periods of time. I would discontinue using it for the time being and have a professional come in and take a look at it.

My sis has a ventless unit that never gives off soot. I too would recommend you getting a service guy out to look at it.
