Half price meat marked down on the "sell by" date. The selection is very random, but I freeze it and shop from my stockpile.

best deal at our local grocery store is their massive meat sale.
The best meat at the the best/lowest price in town (even better the sell by dates reduced price at the other stores).
The butcher will also cut it up how you want, trim it if you wish and wrap it for you for free.

For me, the worst deal is this week's Thanksgiving Day grocery store flyer at my town's main grocery store:
Buy $100 of groceries, get $10 off a turkey.
Outrageous that they expect the customer to spend $100 just to get the turkey deal; so I'm not buying into it. And the flyer is full of inflated prices (4 cobs of corn for $4.00), and stuff I'd never buy anyway (deli-stuff, fancy crackers & cheeses).
Their turkey deal used to be: buy $50 of groceries, and get the discount on the turkey.
I have a frozen turkey deep in the freezer which will do nicely, or I may even keep it for Christmas. Good thing I got an extra one last time they had the deal for $50.
PS: But I will buy 1 sweet potato if they have some; I love sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving!

I can't grow a garden here so I watch for canned goods to go on sale. I can get Green Giant 5 cans for $2 and I stocked up last time. I won't have to buy again for at least a year. They are decent quality and are quick to prepare a side.
Worst deal for me is the meats at my local Food Lions, when I first started shopping there the quality was fine, but they have steadily went down hill. I purchased a large package of Ground Beef a couple of months ago that went brown and smelly within 2 days. It wasn't even mark down. So I now buy it at the trendy butcher shop and pay $4.00 a pound. I buy a pound as I need it, the quality is top notch and it is worth the $4.00total debt: $23977.09 updated 04/02/11

Best deal at the same store as I posted above is ripe bananas.
They don't put them in plastic bags and dump them into a bargain bin anymore. They put 6-10 into a paper bag with a handle, and a couple of great banana recipes printed on the bag.
I can usually get 6 or 7 ripe bananas this way for $1.00, then freeze them and bag for freezer at home. They're pretty good quality, I always check carefully.

At my local farmers' market, I get fresh local tomatoes for $0.19/pound. That's an awesome deal.
Worst is fresh skinless, boneless chicken breasts. I don't know what they go for in the US now, I've been away for 2 years, but here they are about $8/pound. It seems high to me. I haven't bought them in over a year, but I always check the price. My Brand-New Blog: http://homeingreece.wordpress.com

islandgirl - This weeks flyer has fresh boneless skinless chicken breasts at 1.99 a pound (this is when I get some). Usually, however it's been about 4.50 a pound.

Heinz beans will be on sale here this week @ $1.00 per can.
So with those great '$2 off when you buy 5' coupons, they will cost only $0.60 per can. I've got a few coups left, so can add kidney beans and browned beans to my stockpile.

our best is the clearance/day old bread and meats at the stores here. Most of ours do something like this so it pays to know when the stores mark their stuff down. I too like when our Safeway does the brown or spotted bananas in the paper bag. They don't do it too often though the produce manager says as they try to support the food bank in our area. I love it when you can get 3 lbs for a buck!! Sure beats the .79 cents a lb they are now!
And speaking of the worst deals....I hate that just when you get used to how big certain boxes/cans/ etc of food, the manufacturer decides it's time to downsize that product!! It happened recently to one of pasta sauces and now it's not enough to feed 4 people. *sigh*

I am such a sucker for Walgreens. They will have a total steal on feminine pads that I stock up for months when it happens.
The worst part? Getting out of that store without buying ANYTHING ELSE WHATSOEVER. I am such a sucker for that stupid store.LDR

Was excited to find a very small grocery store in a small town where I went garage saling this past weekend - they were advertising a Hog and Beef sale. Well, I got a 1/2 beefer back in March so we're set on hamburger/roasts/steaks, it cost me about $2.18/lb. for the entire half of beef. But as it turns out, the little store had whole hogs for $1.69/lb. and we have to pay a little extra for smoking the 2 hams and all the bacon = $18 surcharge for the smoking. Getting my freezer in order so I can fit it all in when it's done in a month.
Our local grocery store is having their 100th anniversary sale this week so we had a good list of loss leaders this week:
.69/lb whole chicken fryers
1.49/lb fresh strawberries
$1 for 3 lbs. fresh carrots
.99 for one pineapple
.99 for one lb. butter
.49 dozen large eggs
2.99 5qt. pail of ice cream
3.49/lb boneless ribeye steak
.99 one cantaloupe
3.49 for a 3-lb bag of boneless chicken breasts3/26 Afghan #3: 58 done of 191 rows

Buying day old bread on sale and then freezing it.
Best deal ever.
I've been paying attention and only buying the meat that's on sale for less than $2 a pound. I don't care what it is much (probably won't buy tongue or livers), and I'll make a meal around whatever I buy.
I'll buy chicken breast with bone and skin on and will debone it myself. It's easy, just takes a little elbow grease. But there are times when I can find that for just $1 a lb. when skinless/boneless chicken is $3 a lb.
And you can use the skin and bones to make broth.
