Thumbs down Deli cold cut prices are out of control

Bigelow's are boycotting the deli counter. I about passed out when I saw this ad.

    Dietz & Watson
    Choice Top Round Roast Beef
Coated with Salt, Pepper & Garlic, Then Oven Browned to Medium for a Consistency of Taste & Texture
    $899 lb.
    Save $1 Lb.

I refuse to pay these ridiculous prices and this prices reflects a dollar off. I like the convienence of deli meats & cheeses but that's highway robbery. Full of sodium too. Going to buy, cook & slice my own.

Do you buy deli meats & cheeses? What prices do you pay?

Nope I don't buy them for the reason you stated-8.99 a pound ON SALE That's ridiculous!!!

I also don't buy them for health reasons-as you stated they are full of sodium and nitrates.

I used to buy them for sandwiches for when we go to clininc, because it is an all day event, and we just don't like fast food. nor the hospital cafeteria food. But I figured out that if I just plan ahead, we can have sandwiches from a roast or a ham or something earlier in the week. Much healthier and frugal!!

We eat alot of homemade tuna salad here! I can find tuna on sale for 39¢ -50¢ for a 6 oz. can. I like eggs in my tuna salad, so I add three to one 6 oz. can of tuna, plus mayo, a teaspoon or so of mustard, some pickle relish and finely diced onion. Yummy!

I would NEVER pay more than $4.99 a pound for any kind of deli meat. I don't buy it often, sometimes a little ham or turkey when it is on a good sale. I like Italian turkey breast or Cajun turkey breast (from the deli). It is much cheaper to buy a whole turkey breast on sale and cook it yourself. You can do the same thing with a top round roast.

The only time I buy it is for special meals.
2 slices swiss cheese for Chicken cordon bleu
    8 slices sallami for pizza
    pastrami for rubens, etc.
When it's on sale, and I know that I'll never finish a bigger package.

I buy the cheapest RB or turkey I can find for dh to take in the truck. It is still cheaper than buying a sandwich at the truck stop.

Darlene, Hanno bought leg ham the other day, it was $21 a kilo so I guess that's around $10 lb. He's been banned from the shopping now.
