    Default 12 quarts of sauce

Free. My mom gave us a 40lb or so box of roma tomatoes, even lent us her juicer to make it easier to prep them for sauce making. I got 12 qts from all those tomatoes. Plus I saved the seeds/pulp and am going to bury them in the ground to see if they will come up in the summer. My mom is constantly finding random tomato plants on her property from animals dragging off tomatoes or the kids throwing the rotten ones out of the garden. Not to mention when they had a cow....they would find little tomato plant gifts in the spring from where it ate tomatoes and erm, recycled them

    Tomorrow...PUMPKINS!!!

After my first tomatoes I planted, I never had to plant another one. I did come up with some neat natural hybrids from the seedlings I got. I'd always plant one or two store bought plants of favorite eating varieties. I used the volunteers for canning and pickling.

I would also leave some squash on the vines and let them get full ripe until they started to rot, and then bury the seeds. They always came up the next year as well.

Last fall my mom tilled her tomato plants into the garden soil. So this year up came the tomato plants. Nature sure is grand.

~Every year my FIL gives me a grocery bag of tomatoes and I make sauce. Every year I say I'm going to get actual tools to do this and not do it the old fashioned way(blanching to loosen skins, peeling, squishing, then pressing through a sieve to remove seeds). It took about 2 hours to get 2 quarts! Oh well, it WAS good! Just curious, how long did it take to make all that sauce?~

Using mom's juicer thingy it took less than 45 minutes to do all 40lbs of tomatoes!!

The sauce itself cooked down in half the time. I think I simmered it for about an hour to an hour and a half. The whole house smelled so good. The kids were begging me to make goulash for dinner

This is the same 'juicer thingy' my parents have & lent to us. It makes the whole process INFINITELY easier/quicker!!

That sounds good and the canning juicer looks like a big help. I remember my mom making homemade sauce when I was a little girl, I love the smell too .

I just threw in some dried oregano, minced garlic, garlic-pepper spice blend, sugar, basil, onion powder and salt. Along with a handful of chopped peppers and another handful of chopped onions. Oh, and a tablespoon or so of canola oil.

    I didn't measure though.
