Math curriculum for a 5th grader?
My ds has always struggled with math and we have switched around with the curriculum to try to make it easier for him. Maybe that is our problem, but nothing seems to work very well for him. I know math is just a struggle for him at this point.
anyway we started with Singapore and didn't like that. The next year we did Rod and Staff. last year we did Math u see. He did all of the gamma book (multiplication) and most of the delta book (division). So my plan for this year was to finish the delta book and move on to the fraction book and complete that this year. Well it just isn't going well and it was a nightmare last year.
I think he gets very tired of doing the same thing for so long, division right now and only division. What about graphing, fractions, percentages, etc that other 4th graders were learning last year? I also think that he has a hard time with it getting so hard. Basically math u see starts at the very basic of division and works through to the very hardest division they would ever see. so right now it is very very hard. and basically he is behind at this point for spending all of last year on nothing buy multiplication and division.
I am just not sure I want to proceed with the fraction book this year or if I should switch him to a more complete curriculum. I already switched my dd to Horizons. she did math u see last year - the whole addition and substraction books in first grade. I can't see her mastering multiplication in 2 grade and wanted her to have a more complete program so we switched. I don't know if I want to switch ds or not and if so I think horizons might be a little advanced for him, since he is behind. Math is just a struggle and because we did these specific programs last year I feel that he missed out on other parts of math and that moving to a different program will be hard because he hasn't learned anything about fractions or decimals, but yet I know he needs to learn it. I think I am rambling, I just don't know what to do. Any curriculum suggestions out there? Thanks1Jennifer

We use Saxon math for DD. She also didn't do well with the math programs designed on a topical approach. Even when she did well with a concept, once you moved on to the next chapter, she would forget most of what she learned about the earlier topic. Saxon slowly builds on skills, varying the topics covered every few days, and there is lots of review (some say too much - but you can adjust that as you see fit). I found this helps her retain the information she learned before and since it builds slowly on skills already learned, she doesn't get so frustrated and burnt out on a single skill. So, maybe you would want to look into that option?

I'm not familiar with the above mentioned curriculum's, but are there activities available that will help him put the math skills to practical use like recipes to make that involve multiplying or dividing or fractions? Some kids may need that hands on demonstration to finally get the "aha!" moment.
Is your son a tactual or kinetic learner in this skill area? Can practice of the skill be incorporated into a relay race or something like that?

Jennifer, when you say that the problems are getting harder and harder, do you mean that the numbers are just getting bigger, or are they word problems that are getting harder or what?
