How much do kid's activities cost?
~I'm exploring my options for my soon-to-be-six ds but I'd love to have a rough idea how much things cost before I start calling around. For a once a week class ??? How about kiddie sports? TIA!~

Where I live there are sports(soccer, basketball, tennis and baseball) offered through the town recreation department. The fee is around $40 if you live within the city limits and $50 if you are outside the city limits. Little League fees seem to depend on where you live, we have lived in PA, NC and FL; and the fees have ranged from $75 to $325. Gymnastics fun and fitness fees cost $50 a month here, training on the team for competition at the age of your son cost us around $250 a month and karate fees run around $100 a month.

EF $3975.00

It depends on what kinds of things you are looking for. Around here our options are AYSO soccer which is almost $50 for the season, or little league which is $35 for the season. Our park district and YMCA have tons of programs, but they range from $35 - $40 per session which is only about 6 weeks long, which I think is pretty pricey. We are letting our kids pick one activity at a time (per season) and my oldest has chosen baseball and nothing else, and my youngest will be 5 this January, so we'll start letting him pick out some activities and we'll see what he ends up with!

We decided at a very young age our kids would only have one outside activity. We wanted it to be something that they would have for life and we chose music. Dd is in grade 6 piano and it costs us $78 a month, ds#1 in grade 2 and it's $52.00 a month. Remember though, we are in a small rural area. I'm sure in a city it would cost a whole lot more.

It does totally depend on where you live. For example, when my boys were in preschool we lived in rural Nebraska, and paid 59.00 a month for GREAT preschool. When we moved to CA, would couldn't bring ourselves to pay the 269.00 a month for lame-o preschool.....that's just one example, but it does drive home the point that it vaires widely depending on where you live.
Here in rural KS, we pay 20.00 for sports like soccer, basketball, and baseball - 15.00 if you still have your shirt from last year!

I live in rural southeast Missouri. I pay $25 a month for dd14 piano lessons, and the teacher is the retired music teacher from the local school...she does it just for the joy of teaching so the price is crazy low. We pay $25-$30 for little league baseball and basketball per season. My son will be in junior high next year so I won't have to pay for the little league sports anymore as he will be playing for the school.

spring soocer is $40 for the 2 month season, Indoor soccer Sept-April is $300+ Hockey first year is $99, ringette first year $99. Karate session, Sept-Dec $115. Dance $43.mo Piano $50/mo
Lots of 1st year sports are cheap. By the second year it's double to at least $200, usually more like $300 though. So look at the future years too. Not just his year.

It varies greatly depending on the activity and where you live as others have said.
What kind of activity are you considering?

~I'm considering boys gymnastics, soccer, swimming and karate mostly. My ds had Sensory Integration Disorder which has made him a LD in speech, fine and gross motor skills. He's made such huge improvements that I think he can now handle and improve further on a small amount of socialization. He's never done anything without me but I think he's ready to try at least. He admires his older cousin(my niece, 7)so much and she's in gymnastics so I'm leaning that way. I'm just really hoping that a once a week class wouldn't cost more than $40 month. That's about all we can afford right now. I never took any classes(except piano which I plan to teach to my children myself next year)so I'm new to all this stuff.~

I think most of the schools here for kids that age offer intramurals during the day. I know for other sports, like hockey, the fees are crazy. If you want to enroll your kid in hockey, it's a minimum $550 per year registration fee not including gear.
I'd check with your kid's school and see, along with any YMCA or YWCA chapters and the city recreation department.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

It would be awesome if you could find a karate instructor that has a kid that wants to learn piano, you could teach his kid piano and he could teach yours karate. Just a thought.

I live in one of the cheap rural communities so most things for younger kids are maybe $20 for the season. We don't have a chance for alot of lessons unless you want to drive 40 miles. May I suggest scouts as an option? It isn't very costly, has lots of socialization and activity too if you find a good den.
