Question Hooked on Phonics? Has anyone used it?

Dh found the Hooked On Phonics Master Reader set at Walmart on clearance for $35! On the HOP website the same set is being sold for $200!!!!

It's for grades 2-6, includes 4 CD-ROMs and stand up flip books, progress chart, and 4 hardcover books. It looks pretty good. I'm going to try it with my reluctant reader (2nd grade). He likes computer games and loves typing on the computer so I'm hoping this will be less painful for him.

We used to have it at a school where I taught 1st grade. It was a good tool to have and some of the songs are fun... just don't use it as your sole source of reading instruction because phonics provides good word call skills (the ability to recognize and read individual words) but doesn't boost comprehension skills. Sounds like a great deal!

We have used it, and I love it. We also received the "Power Reader" with our set and it is all about comprehension skills. It is an awesome set, and has so much to offer for problem readers.

I have no idea about the set you are talking about, mine is an old one and is on tape, plus has the books along with the power reader that is totally different set from the phonics set.

Wish I could tell you more, but I know the set has worked awesome on all three of my homeschooled children when they used it.

All four of my children have learned to read with Hooked on Phonics. I love it! My almost 7 year old can read at a third grade level. My 19 and 15 year olds are great readers, writers and spellers. Each child is different though, I really had to supplement with a lot of other things for my 11 year old. Phonics was the basis for all four. Hope that helps.
I have five beautiful children and my wonderful best friend as my husband.
