Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I have a 3rd grader and a K here in Washington state and I was surprised to find that they don't pass out any science with the curriculum with either grade. My 8 year old is reading an old science textbook that we got from the thrift store on her own and supplementing it with the collection of science books we have at home. Both her and my 5 year old are huge Bill Nye fans too. We haven't even attempted a real, structured science course yet but I'm kind of thinking I'll hold off on that because I don't want to deflate their enthusiasm.

Truthfully, (as a HS mom of 23 years to four kids, two graduated who work in science/technology fields) elementary school science is best accomplished with library books, a garden, a pet and trips to the park/beach/farm etc.
The time to begin serious science, with a curriculum, is jr. high. That's why I like the Apologia elementary series. They are designed to be read aloud, have a few practical, simple experiments, and NO BUSY WORK!!!! (I am a huge fan of no busy work) Filling out a worksheet, word search or crossword on the parts of a flower is a poor substitute to growing some flowers in the garden or a pot on the patio.

Apologia also has jr high and high school science (the high school curriculum is VERY thorough and rigorous - I am currently teaching the lab portions of both their chemistry and anatomy course to our co-op group.)
Their junior high courses are a good general overview of many different areas and topics. Their 7th grade book is General Science, and the 8th grade is Physical Science. Both are written from a Christian worldview.
The thing I really like is that you can purchase either the hardback textbook OR the entire book as an MP3 CD OR the text (no audio) on CDROM- depending on your child's learning style. In addition, as this is a VERY popular curriculum, the resale value is generally 50% of what you paid brand new - I've find that mine are very easy to resell (in fact, I have two families who want dibs on my high school books!)
I purchase most of my curriculum from Rainbow Resource - best prices, free shipping over $150 (no, I don't work for them
)
Feel free to PM me - I truly enjoy mentoring other homeschoolers - I think it's what the Lord has in mind for me when I'm done HSing my own kids!!
