Default Update on DD and school problems

Well, I was in a meeting with the principal, 2 people from the spec ed dept and 1 lady on contract (can't remember what her specialty is but she was the most helpful in coming up with ideas of things to try).

It has been decided that the school will put DD in the reading lab and monitored for reading and hand writing issues. I will continue with handwriting without tears at home as long as homework time doesn't get too long. She took about 2hrs to do her homework last night so I didn't pull out HWOT. She went to her first reading lab yesterday and loved it. When after school tutoring starts back she will go unless my work hrs get changed again.

There were some things thrown out there that I didn't like (like leaving a 3yo very hyper little boy in the rest of the house alone while I spend hrs with dd to make sure she stays on task). I could be reported to DHS for that.

I did not discuss it with the school but I have ordered some plastic canvas supplies (was ordering some anyway when I got the idea). I am hoping it will help her hand issues and be fun. We'll see.

What a great Mom you are to help your daughter - and you are also realistic - you have 2 children. Good luck with the lab

Another idea to help her with her handwriting is mazes. I have a child who is slightly dysgraphic and he did tons of mazes. It helped him develop some of the muscles for writing.

I actually have 3dc but the oldest isn't ready to watch a child like the 3yo and has no patience to help the 9yo.

I didn't think about mazes. I'll see if I can find some of those really cheap activity books that have them.

We did do 2 pages of HWOT last night. It took us 1hr 45mins for everything but she did have less written home work than the night before.

The plastic canvas sounds like a good idea....when my kids were younger they strung large beads on shoelaces, that may be too "young" for your DD but, they have kits now for friendship bracelets etc. that require using fine motor skills that she might enjoy.

Couldn't read DD's handwriting last night and didn't know what all her homework was. The one we didn't do she could read it but it was so general she didn't remember what she was supposed to do.

I have been worried about not having a science book and DD having to take notes. All her science notes look incomplete. It looks like definitions without the word that is to be defined. Some of the "definitions" don't make since or are incomplete.

The website is down (making changes) and I don't know if they have access to their e-mail (not that I know their school e-mail address without the web site anyway). They can only call me on their planning period and I don't know when that is or if I will be able to take the call at that time. Phone tag is not good.

This is so frustrating. How am I supposed to help her if I don't know what she is supposed to be doing?

What I have done with HWOT is break it down to small pieces here and there not making her do all of it at once.

My son uses a weight that goes on his hand. My other son uses a weighted pencil.

Wonder if could get a copy of the cd that goes with the very early HWOT maybe your little one would like mate man and keep him briefly distracted for you to help your dd.

So glad to see your active involvement in your DD's education. How old is she? It's terrific that she responded so positively to the reading lab!!

Sounds as if things are coming together for all of you - it does take time. Agree with the idea of downchunking her work to make it easier to stay on smaller tasks.

Is she a special education student, IEP, etc?

Looking forwardd to hearing more about her progress and activities throughout the year!!

She is 9yo. She is not in SE and doesn't have an IEP. The IEP is what I am trying to get. I know I won't get an answer now but for 4yrs I have been trying to get an answer to why they put her in a developmental class (they were not taught what they needed to go on to 1st grade) if she was/is fine and what did they plan to accomplish and did they accomplish it.

I am having fits with her handwriting and have no idea what we are supposed to do for school. They normally have all the homework, spelling words and depending on the teacher voc. words on the school web site. So far not this yr and administration said it could be months before it is all up. I am a little worried that they won't be very good and she will get discouraged. We didn't study her science until the day before the test because that was when she got a study sheet. Her hand written notes were incomplete to say the least.

Default Does she have a "home room"?

or is that a concept that is no longer in play? If so, can you ask her teachers for a copy of their lesson plan... or at least the schedule of what to read/when, and the assigned homework that goes along with? That way, you can look at her texts, see what's today, tomorrow, etc. and regulate her/your/your son's time the most efficiently.

Does your DD have a 504 plan? an IEP will take longer to get trust me I still pushing to get my 9yr son an IEP we currently only have a 504 plan and I am still pushing for more test and IEP.

Don't be afraid to ask teacher for assignments. I have yet to meet a teacher who was really there to teach deny me this request.

. Also, when you go to meetings take notes. Note anytime you talk with someone and what their title is.
