My sister tried to get her son in the free online public school. In her state there are only so many slots and way more applicants. My nephew unfortunately was not chosen.
I love the "five in a row" unit studies and the forums. They are a great group of people and support each other in just about everything.

I am currently homeschooling a 3rd grader
I'm more school-y than some. I use a Catholic curricula from www.chcwebs.com love it. Short easy lessons, and since we are Catholic an easy way to introduce various faith topics.
We also use All About Spelling, this is a fantastic way to learn. We don't follow the layout completely, but the cards and rules are fantastic. For math, we use mathmammoth. Since she was a year in traditional school, she is a little behind in the program, but we finish their grade 2 book next week. So really, only a couple months behind, but compared to the local schools, nearly a year ahead.
Depending on what you want from homeschooling, there are several paths. Take out some books from the library. Charlotte Mason, The Well-Trained mind. Visit some message boards to are about homeschooling. You may end up a 'purist' in terms of your approach, or a blend of various styles.
I love classical, but it's very intensive, so we use the approach for some subjects. Not for others.
Remember the library is a great resource, and look into books before buying them. Some you only need for a month, or less, so the library is really the best resource. Some books can be found as free ebooks too. Or inexpensive ebooks. I like as much paperless as I can since you simply generate alot of paper as a homeschooler anyway.
feel free to pm if you want to chat.

If I was only going to use one thing, it would be the series, "What your Nth grader needs to know". You can buy them on ebay for one cent plus shipping. Then, you can build lessons around each section of the book. That way, you are sure not to miss out on anything. Once you homeschool for a while, you will learn more about works for you and your family. These books are a great way to get started, though.
