What to do?
I hope someone here can help. My DD is in 1st grade. She is very smart. We are in the military and this past oct moved on base and thus moved schools. The previous school was excellent. They were very involved with the children. This new school...well leaves little to be desired. Her techer does not believe in homework, therefore she gets none. She dropped a letter grade in one subject. We asked for what she teaches and what they are studying and have not received it. I talked to the principal but all she does is glorify her teachers. My kindergartener is bringing home dot-to-dots. What do I do? I do not feel like I should send them all day to come home and reteach. Any suggestions?

I don't have any suggestions Beth. We had excellent public schools here......I wouldn't have had a clue as to how to go about really homeschooling. You might start with some homeschooling curriculim...there are lots of homeschooling moms here. You might pm homestead mama.....she could probably help you. Sorry I'm not more help.

Hmmmm, frankly I don't know too much about supplementing institutional schooling. If you give your kids extra school work at home, you run the risk of burning them out. And if they get too far ahead of their classmates, you might have problems there, too.
If you are sure you want to stick with this school, I would insist on a meeting with the teacher and principal together, and air your concerns.

You are right. Bottom line - Your children need an education. Your choices are public, private, or homeschool. I would have a really hard time sending my kids away for hours a day, and then having to use our free family time to teach them.

I agree. You need to have another meeting with the teacher and the principal and tell them how disappointed you are in the schooling your dd is getting.
If you get no satisfaction, you need to then decide what you should do, change schools, private school or homeschooling. Homeschooling isn't for everyone, but I sure wouldn't want my child to be attending school all day and then come home and you have to do all their schooling. Something is wrong there!!
btw - is there other public schooling nearby?

The next closest school is in another district and from what I can gather, it is just as bad. The other big problem is the fact that the state we are in gives this test to base their progress therefore the teachers only teach from the test so that they will do well. I am just very frustrated.

Wow, then the next thing is to look at private schooling or homeschooling. I don't have any information on private schooling, but if you need any info on homeschooling, just ask away.
Homeschooling though is something you really have to be convinced you want to do. You need to think long and hard on it before you make the move. I'm not trying to discourage you from homeschooling, just wanting to give some thoughts on it before you jump into it.

Beth, Have you considered putting your daughter in one of the magnet schools? They have outstanding cirriculum and since you live in Wichita Falls you can choose what school your child attends. I know it is too late to change this year but you might want to consider it for next year. You can call the schools and request a tour of them if you are interested. Huey Elemetary (which is close to the base) teaches using the Montessori method. There is an engineering based program at Austin Elemtary (on Broad St) , Kate Burgess is an International
School of Languages.
I hope this helps.

Beth,
I hope you were able to talk to the teacher and the principal together to voice your concern. I can't believe your kindergartener is only doing dot-to-dots. I work for a public school here in Texas and our kindergarteners are reading before they go to first grade, doing basic math, and more. With the new TAKS test the state has, the teachers have more pressure put on them to get these children ready for this test. If you fail this test you stay in the same grade next year regardless if your academic progress in the classroom was wonderful. I think I would have another conference if you have already held one and talk to them and ask them if their school is ready for this test...TAKS (pronounced tax). Also, in Texas the educational board gives each school a passing or failing grade. Do you know what their grade was? The ISD as a whole has a grade and then you can tell whether or not the school is doing what they should be doing. Our ISD has an excellent rating which means our students are above on state testing.
Good luck with your decision.~*Michelle*~

We checked into the Montesourri school and signed them up but that is limited to a certain number so we will see. My Kindergartener is doing math now, just addition. The school year is almost over. My !st grader got a B and we asked what she was studying, never given the answer. This semester she got an A, so I am unsure what is happening. The teacher is sort of stand offish, especially when I ask her about information. I also think that much of the problem is that since we are on a base we don't get as much funding, but I could be wrong. I guess it is the day in which we live.
