homework
When do you have your kids do their homework? As soon as they get home, after supper? What has worked the best for you?
I am trying to work out a schedule for dd. She doesn't have alot of homework but it is just enough that I am having to sit on her to get her to finish it. How do you work it out in your house? Thanks!

Kathryn just had homework a couple of times a week last year as she was only in kindergarten. I sat with her after she got home and had a snack. This way it was done first thing in case something else came up. I put it in her backpack as soon as she finished.
This year she's in first grade, so I'm not sure how much she'll have, and her first day is today.
I think that maybe we'll wait until after dinner while it's still light out so she can go play with her friends when she first gets home.

I make mine do it when they get home or it would never get done. They can have snacks while they do it and if they need a break, I give it to them.

DD has about 2 hours homework per night. YUCK. I let her rest and watch tv or play and have a snack for about an hour then we start homework. There is usually a break in there for supper and then we finish. I am usually close by while she's doing it, like folding laundry or cleaning the kitchen, etc. She does it in the breakfast nook where there are not any distractions.

Mine always did their's as soon as they got home. I don't think that there was as much homework for the younger kids back when my kids were in elementary school. We did have a mandatory reading time for all 3 kids, they had to read at least 30 minutes per day, they could choose when they wanted to do it, they usually chose the 30 minutes before bedtime and they were allowed to choose their own reading materials (these were Mom's rules not the schools). DD read "Little Women" when she was in 2nd grade. All 3 of my kids love to read now, even my 2 grown sons will sit down with a good book and read.

Depending on the age of the student and the amount of homework, we usually suggest doing a bit right when they get home, then allowing a "play" break, then dinner, and then they should get back to it as soon as possible after dinner. For kids who have troubled staying motivated, doing it all after school is really the best bet, because once you give them a break, they'll never get back to it.
