What would you do?
If you were just staying with your in-laws for the 2nd time(remember this is maybe the 4th time I have had any dealings with all of them whatsoever), would you make yourself right at home and go through their cabinets and fridge? Or would you hope for some direction. Like such and such is here, you can find such and such here...and therefore....
My DH wouldn't even help me to find something for lunch today....and actually got upset with me because I didn't eat. But I just don't feel comfortable enough to just start going through their stuff, maybe it's because of how I was raised or something.
I am so used to when we stay at my parents house where, even though I know where everything is, they still give us a rundown of where pots and pans are kept, what they have in the house for lunches and dinners...so if you have to fend for yourself you can without having to rummage.
Not that we have to fend for ourselves there usually! If they don't cook we eat out. Whereas here if they don't cook you have to figure it out yourself.

Were they there? Did anybody eat lunch? Dh should have helped you all eat lunch if they weren't there, It sounds pretty
I know you are going to be a happy camper when you move into your new home.

I'm the same way. Maybe you should just ask mil to show you where everything is, and if there's anything you should leave alone.

Could you maybe say, "I'd hate to mess something up so when you have a sec maybe you could give me the rundown on where things are & what's off limits, then I can handle things from there..." or "I feel like I need a seeing eye dog & a map to get around in someone else's kitchen - could you give me the tour..." or something.....
It took me several visits with my InLaws before I felt comfortable "plundering" - now, they just leave me there & say "you'll find it" and I do!

Well I went through the fridge tonight and there really isn't much to eat. Everything in there at the moment is pretty much for the bbq they have planned tomorrow.

I'd feel pretty much the same Phaedrae. The ladies have given some great advice and I don't have any to add other than maybe offer to cook a meal (your choice and specialty ofcourse) and in doing so asking mil to show you where things are. I also think that this would earn you major brownie points as well

I think that is great advice and if she is not receptive to the idea of you cooking in her kitchen I think I would take my kiddos and go out to eat.Originally posted by PrairieRose
