    Default Character To The Core

These are my notes from a seminar I attended at my state homeschool conference.

    Character To The Core

    - "Success is failure upon failure with great enthusiasm." ~ Theodore Roosevelt

    - How much you value someone inspires them.

Do not respond to a child's first emotion and do not respond in your first emotion. Give God time to work in the child's heart and place conviction for his (the child's) action in his (the child's) heart.

    - So often we become the judge, jury, and conviction of our children's lives. Don't do this!

    - Our children need to be the ones to initiate the apology and repentence.

    - Sometimes there are character flaws in our children because of mistrust they have in us (mistrust in self-worth). When we value someone or something, we protect it (you highly value it, it's highly prized).

    - Chidren follow by example. Who will influence their lives?

    - We're not called by God to develop the external values of our children. (Don't worry about what other people think about how your children act. Let them be who they are. That's the only way we can see their true character.)

    - 4 Styles of Parenting
1.) Dictatorial - My life is determined to make others feel guilty and pressured so they will never let me down.

2.) Detached - Life depends on keeping others from blaming me for what goes wrong.

3.) Enmeshed - Life depends on convincing others they can't live without me.

4.)Indulgent - Life depends on indulging others so I will be accepted and appreciated.

(You can be a different one of these with each of your children.)

    - Don't try to break your child's spirit and will - they are God given.

    - Parenting is about love that never fails. It's about compassion.

    - Value is determined by one's understanding of worth.

    - Character is cultivated by faith. (It's got to cost you something or you won't develop character.)

*** At this point the seminar had to end due to time constraints. Here are the remaining notes from the seminar - http://www.lamplighterpublishing.com/EightBlessing.html
