Default I got the results of Daniel and Patrick.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but Patrick and Daniel went through 6 hours of testing each (done in two days) by a neurolopyschologist and we got the results this morning.

We had a 3 hour apointement to have it all explained to us.
Daniel has dyslexia and ADD. He is 3 years behind in reading and is able to write only 50% of written words of grade 5 and he is in the 20-30 % of kids who present agressive behavioural problems with the ADD....sigh...it explains everything about how we've been living a rollercoaster ride with him with his difficult behaviour almost day after day, since forever.

Patrick has ADD and needs to be tested in 1 1/2 years to confirm if he is dyslexic because he is too young for certain tests...but Patrick's tests are more positve than Daniel. He is very high above average for certain things...I can't remember what exactly, there's so much she told us. We have 26 page report for each child, to read over.

When Patrick is 8 years old, he will be passing another test for

    Central Auditory Processing (CAP):

A number of children with learning disabilities demonstrate Central Auditory Processing (CAP) problems.

These children usually have normal hearing and normal intelligence. They are unable to effectively utilize auditory information, especially when competing sounds are present. They are described as inattentive, easily distracted by background noise, and exhibit difficulty following verbal directions.

The following are characteristic of children with CAP problems:
    • Academically, children with CAP deficits do not perform to their potential.
    • Socially, they tend not to "get along" with peers.
    • Communicatively, they may have a language disorder.

Well, now we know what the problem is. We've got ALOT of work to do with them...and hopefully the should also cooperate and offer the help they need. Daniel may need to be transferred in a class with academically challenged kids. And both need to be medicated to help them to be able to learn in school, as they really can't concentrate on listening for very long to a teacher talking....

I would really apreciate any advice, if you have been through or are living through a similar experience with your children. Thank-you.

    Lucy,
First of all . I'm glad you are finally getting some answers and help. Before you medicate your boys, try them on coffee to see if it will help them to concentrate better. The Caffiene helps some children with ADD concentrate better in the same way that Ritalin does but without the nasty side effects. One of my former students did this in elementary school and it worked wonders for him. He and I would have a cup of coffee together when he first got to school and then another around lunch time. If he did not have his coffee, he would be bouncing off the walls and could not concentrate. When my oldest son was little, I suspected that he too had ADD without the hyperactivity. We started giving him coffee in the morning (adding some hot chocolate to it) and it really did help him to concentrate better. We also noticed in his case that too much sugar would affect him and cut his concentration.

No advice except this, Lucie - don't give up. It may seem overwhelming now with all the information you have been given but read through it at your own pace and then work out your strategies.

I send love across the miles.

No advice Lucie, just thanking the lucky stars for you that you've learned what the situation is. Here's hoping there are some more natural remedies that you can try before medications.

Thanks everyone. Yes, at least now we know what the problem is and now we will be getting specific help so that they can learn better.

Hugs Lucie! I really don't have any advice. Like Rhonda said, I would read through the report at my own pace and note down anything that you have questions on. Hope this will help you with a starting point on helping the boys.

Lots of love your way Lucie. I know you have had a tough time lately but I am very glad that you did the tests and can now work on some of the problems. I am so glad your boys have such a loving mother as you.

Lucie, I am glad you got the results and now know what the problems are. Having raised a child with developmental and mental challenges my only advice is to follow your gut instincts and question constantly. You know your children best and you will instinctively know if a certain treatment is working or not. Above all don't forget to enjoy your boys. They grow up way to fast.

I will be praying for you.

I know that you will do the right things for your boys. You have the information now, and even though it might seem scary to try new things, you will figure out the best thing to do. I will pray for you, for strength and knowledge.
