Tell me about your hs'ing experience
Hello all...I haven't been by FV in a while although this is one of my favorite communities. Our hard drive had to be reformatted and we lost all our links and then the holidays were upon us.
During all this we decided to hs our middle child and I would love to hear a little about why you hs and your experiences.
Thanks!!

I use a lot of stuff online and free teachers samples. There are many good links here many I aready had so I wont repeat them.
why did you choice to make this change?

I would go slow and not try to be "school" like.....

We are in our 7th year of homeschooling now and we love it. My only regret is that we didn't start doing it earlier!
Since I don't have a whole lot of time right at the moment I thought I'd give you a link to a previous thread in which I explained why we homeschool. I'd also suggest looking through past threads in this forum because there is so much good information there. We all learn from each other!
Good luck and enjoy this wondeful journey!
Why did you decide to homeschool?

This is our first year of homeschooling too. My daughter Mickie just turned 12 in November. We use the Accelerated Christian Education program and we love it. The program consists of 12 paces for each subject and the student works each pace at their own pace. We do field trips, library visits, and we get together with other local families who use the same program on a regular basis. Mickie loves to cook and bake here at home, and she is also learning how to do laundry, shop for food, and this spring when we plant our garden, she will take a active part in planting, caring for and harvesting the crop as well as canning and freezing. She helps take care of the animals we have here and has bottle raised and cared for her own little pig and she helps with our goats and chickens. She gets an allowance and is learning how to budget her money and has a savings account. She pays her tithes & Sunday School offering at church.
With this program, each student learns to set their own goals for learning and that was somewhat of a challenge for Mickie at first, but now she sets her goals and meets them and she loves it. We are taking a break for Christmas at the moment, but she can't wait to start her next paces.

Thanks for your replies!
Here's our situation....I may have mentioned in other posts that my husband & I adopted 3 siblings that had been in foster care. The youngest was getting ready to start kindergerten and the other two were in 3 & 5 grade. We talked about hs'ing as a bonding method but the older tow came to us with a lot of issues and baggage and I needed them in school just to get a break!
They've worked so hard to start resolving some of their major issues and life as a new family of five is getting easier.
The older two are 2-3 years behind academically and the youngest one (now in 1st grade is advanced). We're having trouble bonding with the middle one (our daughter, now age 9) so we decided to hs her and work on her attachment and bonding issues. We'll also be starting with the oldest one (our son, now age 12) when school is finished for the year.

I think homeschooling is a wonderful way to bond as a family. Be aware that the first few years of having them all home may be a little rough because behavioral issues seem to be multiplied and after all the kids have gone through they may need time to "detox" from the school setting. I think the stability that homeschooling offers could be very benificial to your 3 precious kids!

We just started hsing in September. I only hs our 17year old high school junior. I had always wanted to hs but dh and the children were never interested. We have had some school issues with ds then found out we could not just switch him to his base school cause we did not do so by June 1st. We use an on-line and correspondence program through the University of Oklahoma. They do the lesson plans and grading and I do the organization. I have really been empressed by this program. I don't think I could of planned a curriculum for him at this age level that compares to what he is getting.
Good Luck and Have fun with it! I have to keep myself from getting stressed out and stressing him out.

We're in our 13th and final year of homeschooling. My oldest two have completed their grade 12 at home and then gone on the college. Ds#1 has graduated from college with honours. Ds#2 is still taking a few course to see which direction he wants to go. This is my dd's last year homeschooling. We gave our children the option of attending regular school for grade 10 and up but they all wanted to finished up at home. It's being a incredible journey we will never forget or regret.

I'm not actually homeschooling officially yet, (my oldest is only 3 but we are going to) but I was homeschooled my entire school life age 5-18 and I just wanted to encourage you. I know things can be rough and I know there will be times you feel like quiting.
Teaching me and my 3 siblings at home is one of the greatest gifts my mom has given us, and something I'm still thankful for every day! If something doesn't work for you - change it. In my mind the ability to tailor to the child is one of the main strenghts of homeschooling. You Can Do It!
