Homeschool Holiday Question
I have a question for those of you who homeschool.
On a national holiday, like today, do you take time out of your normal curriculum to teach about the holiday? For example...are you discussing Dr. Martin Luther King and his contributions with your children today? On Columbus Day, do you discuss Columbus? Etc?My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

Hi Amy,
We are taking the day off today from school but have dedicated the whole day to learning about Dr. King and his message in the past. My kids are very aware of the Civil Rights Movement because we have studied it in depth.

I'm not a fan of just teaching something on one day because the calender says. We learn/teach/discuss important topics all the time. The only time I would set aside a specific day is if it's something we don't normally celebrate, such as Chinese New Year or Yom Kippur.

NYC...that's how I do it in my classroom, as well. I guess my question was more along the lines of, since they aren't in public school, therefore don't know the school calendar, do you make it a point that today is the birthday of a very special man, etc.

Even if they were in school, they wouldn't be discussing MLK day today because there's no school today. LOL
Each of my kids have their own calender in their room and they know which holidays fall on which days.
Two of my three are biracial so MLK is someone that we discuss often.
