Favorite reading books?
This could actually fit under a few different topics, but I am putting it here. I want to build the kids library witht heir favorite books from school year to school year. We have alot of "fluff" books as I call them. The ones you can pic up in the supermarket for a buck. Short simple stories, often sesame street, or current cartoon figures (strawberry shortcake, sponge bob, etc).
But we also have some really great ones, like Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstien (sp?), Where the Wild Things Are , The Giving Tree to name a few.
What were your favorite story books as a child? What are your childs favorite story book?
Here is a list that ds read last school year, that we loved:
A Chair for My Mother by Vera Williams (William Morrow, 1984)
A Story a Story by Gail Haley (Simon & Schuster, 1977)
Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey (1948; Penguin, 1976)
Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina (1940; HarperTrophy reissue edition, 1987)
Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey (1941; Penguin reprint ed., 1998)
Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton (1939; Houghton Mifflin, 1977)
Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag (Paper Star reissue edition, 1996)
The Complete Adventures of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter (Viking reissue edition, 1984), or these separate titles: The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, and The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies
The Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall (Penguin, 1983)
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown (1942; HarperCollins, 1977)
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (Penguin, 1976)
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams (William Morrow, 1978)
Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Mosel (Henry Holt, 1989)
Tom Thumb by Richard Jesse Watson (Harcourt Brace, 1993)
The Velveteen Rabbit was one of my favs from childhood. DH and I both loved Dr Suess books.
This year DS will be reading:
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle
Sylvester and the Magic Pebble
Bedtime for Frances
Danny and the Dinosaur
A Picture for Harold's Room
Frog and Toad Are Friends
Owl at Home
Little Bear
No Fighting, No Biting
Amelia Bedelia
Who Will Be My Friends?
And I Mean it, Stanley!
Harry and the Lady Next Door
The First Thanksgiving
Winnie the Pooh
Tales of Amanda Pig
The Legend of the Bluebonnet
I also loved all the golden books and the disney hardcover books. Not to mention Sweet Pickle Books.
So, back to my question before I got off on my own little listing party...
What were your favorites, what are your childs favorites?~~ Missy ~~

My kids loved The Velveteen Rabbit, The Lttle Prince, Where the Wild Things are, Animalia and The 11th Hour by Graham Base. When they were really little, they liked the Richard Scary books and Where's Wally?
That's a really good list.

These probably qualify as fluff ( though they aren't a buck and are chapter books) but both my boys loved Captain Underpants books. I couldn't understand the love of these until I read one to little girl who was 8 but couldn't read well yet. I about laughed myself silly!!!!!!
My boys also loved The rifle , Happy potter and Star Wars series.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

Sara, that's a great site
I'm a little confused by their reading level criteria though. I put in that Kathryn is in 3rd grade and would like something challenging to read.
Two of the suggestions were these:
Winnie the Pooh, reading level: 4.8 (can't possibly mean almost 5th grade reading level, right?)
and
A Pocket for Corduroy, reading level: 3.3
So then I thought that those numbers couldn't be the grade level, but then I saw a book called Nothing's Fair in 5th Grade, and it's a reading level of 5, which makes sense.
I'm confused

I am wicked excited!! I went to the ARC today ( a thrift shop) and found The Velveteen Rabbit and Winnie the Pooh. And I only spent 1.80 for them total!
Yeah!!
Later this week we will take 3-5 dollars and look some more.

the school program erick is in gives him the books for the school year and then after the year is over he has to send them back, so the book lists I have are all stuff he has to return. I am trying to build him (and his sister and brother) a library of their own using the book lists as shopping lists of sorts.
