Chelle, what about that homemade playdough, will that harden if you let it air dry long enough? Or maybe the salt dough for ornaments?
That is just way too much to put on 3rd graders!

Well, I think this project is appropriate for third grade. The school curriculum is getting more intense each year. Teachers are being asked to provide differentiated instruction and projects are one way to achieve this goal. Personally, I hate doing projects. I try to assign as few as possible. I'd use the Internet for a bunch of the information. As for supplies, I'd consider paper mache. This might seem like a goofy idea, but what about popcorn balls??? That would be fun to make and eat while she was doing the project. You could make the ball according to size. I'm sure someone has a recipe for popcorn balls.

Candy Corn Popcorn Balls
If kids are helping shape these treats, make sure the marshmallow mixture is cool enough for them to handle. Store the confections in an airtight container for up to three days.
8 cups popped light butter microwave popcorn (about 1 [3-ounce] bag)
1 cup candy corn
1/4 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (10-ounce) bag marshmallows
Cooking spray
Combine popcorn and candy corn in a large bowl.
Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large saucepan over medium heat; stir in 1/4 teaspoon salt and (10-ounce) bag marshmallows. Reduce heat to low; cook for 7 minutes or until the marshmallows melt and the mixture is smooth, stirring frequently.
Pour marshmallow mixture over popcorn mixture, stirring to coat well. Lightly coat hands with cooking spray; shape popcorn mixture into 20 (2-inch) balls.
Yield: 20 servings (serving size: 1 popcorn ball)

Sounds like Paul and Ty's school. Pauly is on his 4 report for the year and Tyler is on his 3rd. That stinks that it's due after the christmas break. Sounds like an interesting project though

Not trying to one up you, but my daughter had to do this project in the second half of her 2nd grade year. The children had to make a 3-D model with minimal help from parents. We did use the styrofoam balls from Michael's. We "mounted" them to a flat styrofoam disk on toothpicks. The sun was in the middle and all the planets were orbiting around it. My dd painted all of the planets, mounted them on toothpicks and mounted it to the disc. I printed out the labels for her and cut them out. She attached the labels. That is all I did to help. I believe the net total time to complete this project was about 2 hours.
I agree that school curriculum is getting harder, but unfortunately, it is needed to make sure American children are keeping up academically. The problem is that teacher's have larger class sizes and have to supply more things from their own pocket.
I am sure your daughter will do a great job on her project. Try to get it done as soon as possible so she has a chance to enjoy her Christmas break!
