Yes, the purpose of field trips is usually educational. However, sometimes, a field trip can be just because it's a nice treat for the kids. Everyone always complains how school is so rigorous and demanding and there's no time for kids to be kids. Well, I'd say this is one of those times that the kids are getting a nice break and a bonding experience with their class and their teachers. I'd also have to assume that they'll read the book in class and maybe do something with it. (Ridiculous amount of money to have to pay, yes, absolutely.)

First, that is a ridiculous (sp) amount for any field trip. Chelle, I know Kathryn does a lot of fund raisers for school, so what exactly are they for if not to help out with these trips?

School supplies and other events throughout the year. A portion of their field trips is paid for by those field trips but not all. It just wouldn't be possible.

I agree with most of this.  Going to the IMAX  is more expensive than a regular movie.  Also, the IMAX experience is awesome.  I've only gone once to a Harry Potter film.  Most likely the teacher is doing something with language arts and movie.  The teacher might be doing character analysis, elements of literature, etc. . .  I'm sure there is a connection to the curriculum.  Our field trips are always connected with the curriculum.

We usually get about a weeks notice, but have never had to pay for a trip.  There is such a high amount of PTO participants at my kids school and so many fundraisers, that no one has to pay for a field trip.  I think if they require you to pay that they should give you more than a weeks notice.  Sounds like that's a fun field trip. Hope she has a great time.  Pauly had a field trip to the Museum of Science today, but school is closed, due to the snow.  He was upset to because he was really looking forward to going with his friends.  He has been there so many times but it's that type of place that you could never get sick of.
