Does anyone have any input on this unit study? Pros and cons are welcome!
DD9 loves all the Little House books and I hope to use this to spark her interest in these books and this time period. I have always loved this series of books as well and I hope I can effective teach this. DS7, I hope, will also be interested in the farming/hunting/outdoor aspect this this book presents.
We haven't done this as a planned unit of study however, dd #3 (9 yrs old) LOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEESSSSSSS the Little House Books. We have incorporated a lot into regular studies and some compare and contrast activities.
She is so interested that I was a little concerned for a short while then she has come back to this century. LOL.
In fact my mom is buying her a sewing machine for Christmas since she wants to try her hand at sewing like Mary and Laura.
We've also done some cooking from the books. It was fun.
Let me know how it goes for you. I'd be interested to hear.

Dehydrating...it's just not for beef jerky anymore!
Are you aware that there are books about Rose (Laura's daughter) and Caroline (her mom)? They are written with the same flavor as the originals. Also, the orginal series has been broken down into small books for beginning readers.
Funny you should ask, Lori. We have read all the Little house series. We began with Laura, then moved to Rose. DD got the Martha years books for Christmas and we have picked up the Caroline years along the way. We have enjoyed all these books because you are right, they are written with the same flavor. The latest one was about when Caroline and Charles fell in love. Really good stuff.
Both my daughters loved the Little House series (and Martha and Caroline)as well!!! (my eldest Dd never liked Rose however). But I have not used the unit study you mentioned....
They enjoyed the books so much that I didn't want to give them a "school" flavour. I just wanted them to love them and absorb them....without any interference from me......
So instead I have used unit studies that were based on those time periods without using the little house books.
One unit study I used was "Living off the land" (The Great Canadian Unit Study Series), it covered Explorers, Pioneers, Gold Rush etc....using really great books, that even my son enjoyed.
How old are your children?
My last pioneer fanatic is 9 years old. We just finished making butter while reading about the process.......
The Prairie Primer did not work for us, but I really don't prefer unit-study type schooling (I'm just too rigid, personality-wise, I guess). I do have a copy of the Prairie Primer that I have been trying to sell - I am asking $20 (that includes postage). New, I believe it was $44?? (I don't have it in the room with me).It has very little wear, no marks, and is from our (non-smoking) home. If anyone is interested, please email me at moldy1965@yahoo.com. Please put HS book in the title.
I have not done this, but we have read all the books and visited the sites in De Smet. The kids are in love with it! The problem for us right now is my oldest is a ds who is 8 and then a dd who is almost 6 and then a ds who is almost 4 and a dd who is 2. SOOOO, I plan on doing this in a few years when the girls are older. Then we will visit more sites and actually do the Prairie Primer. I figure my oldest boy would then be 10 or 11, and he will probably sit in on stuff still, but maybe do his own thing. I can't wait though!
We started with the first book today. Led to a very lively discussion on the differences in life today and then. I think I almost made DD9 become vegetarian when we were reading about the butchering process. She looked a little green and had a hard time understanding the whole picture of where her food comes from. Kind of funny from my point of view but I'm sure she holds and entirely different view.
So far, it looks like it will be a great fit for us.
