I'm a cash stasher, too! I have a beautiful Polish stoneware jar with a lid that holds my 'dire emergency' fund.

I had a house robbed, in Boise, years ago and do not keep much extra around the house. Not even a change jar anymore. Too many break ins in this area too. Writing it down and a checking acct. will have to do.

I used to do this before I got married. I just made it up myself! If we ever get caught up, I'm going to show some of this info to my husband.
I did mine a little differently, I had envelopes for all my bills, so when I got paid, I would put a little money in each envelope so when the bill was due, the money was there.
Say, my car insurance was $100 a month, I knew I had to put $25 from every paycheck in there.

Tip: Showing this to your husband now will help you get caught up.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

What a great alternative!! I love it!! I will be looking for those when school supplies go on sale. Right now I am using envelopes, but I get frustrated with the change and trying to fit it back in.

I do not use the envelope system, i write out our monthly budget every month on paper and 'carry over' $ week to week for the 'big' monthly expenses.
I am however TOTALLY guilty of stashing cash around, when saving up for something big. We are currently striving to replace my car within a year or two, saving up for that, I use our $1's and $5's and sometimes $10 or $20 if we can swing it and add it to the 'stash'. Less likely to make a poor decision with it and buy something else or pay a bill with it if I can tap into it with a debit card or few strokes of a keyboard online. I know, I know, it's not like it's HARD to spend cash, but I rarely use actual cash, just stick to my budget with my debit card, works for me.

I like Gail Vax-Oxzlade's (sp?) jar system. My problem is remembering to write everything down!

Ditto for me as well. I watch "Till Debt do us Part" on television each week, but I have yet to set up my jars w/ labels. Her systems a good choice for storing cash at home. I'll try to get set-up this week.

When it comes to our personal finances we need to be wise in managing it and I think doing the envelope system is incredible. It is one way of organizing your budget in a proper way.
