For some categories I let the money roll over, but others I will clear at the end of the month. My miscellaneous envelope for example will be cleared at the end of the month, but clothing envelopes are allowed to build up. I also use a mixture of cash and multiple bank accounts.

I have two kinds of budget items: those where the extra rolls over, and those where half of it rolls over and the other half goes to savings. The ones where half of the extra go to savings are the food (but not restaurants), toiletries, and cleaning/paper products categories. Things like car repairs, utilities, and public transportation categories add up. We don't use envelopes; everything is on paper.
