Are robots hurting job growth? - 60 Minutes - CBS News

Sure the stock market is doing well, companies are making more profit by doing more with fewer people (one article I recently read was how Kodak...which is now bankrupt...used to employ 140,000 people and Instagram employs 13). I have friends who are lawyers who are unemployed, read more of how doctors are being replaced by robots, self checkouts, etc. I'm sorry, but while the world becomes "more efficient", there will be more people un/underemployed (I've also read where 50% unemployment will be the new norm). I think of how people used to say that globalization will only help us (sure they sent all the jobs in this country overseas and now since THOSE people have increased their standard of living and want better wages and conditions, companies are mechanically replacing people). My question is if all the jobs are being mechanized, who is going to have the $ to buy the goods and services. I'm not just supporting Local, I'm supporting People;) Thoughts????

Hello Frugal village I'm on a great shoe hunt! I'm looking for a new pair of shoes and I've already bothered my friends to death over it. I figured one last ditch effort to ask the great people of this community for advice/opinions/suggestions.

A little info first. I'd say 99% of the winter time I wear running sneakers and the other 1% of the time i wear boots with fur in them. In the summer i switch between running sneakers, flip flops and velcro strapped sandals. I dress casual (jeans, tshirts, sweaters, shorts, capris, khaki shorts, tanktops) most of the time and occasionally (maybe 1-2 times a month) i find that i need to wear something dressier. On those occasions I wish i could just put on something dress/casual but always end up going dressy because none of my shoes are appropriate for even slightly dress tops.

Here are a few pictures of the shoes i currently wear.

Here is a list of needs/wants not in any specific order.

1. Leather (like a dress shoe, smooth. Not fuzzy.)
2. Good sole
3. Good arch support
4. Without straps or laces (not a deal breaker, just a preference)
5. Able to be worn with jeans, shorts and possibly skirts
6. Wide toe area (i have inherited my mothers bunions and need wide shoes or i have pains in my feet)
7. Affordable. We are of course at the Village for a reason, to save money. But if the right shoe were to present itself i wouldn't mind paying a bit of extra money for something that is worth it.

I did look at Sperry Top Sider boat shoes and really like them

My DS just graduated from High School yesterday and has held a job since he was 14. He has worked at his current job for 2 years and just recently became a server there.

His first 2 weeks as a server he made $1,000 in tips. I kid you not. I counted and recounted his stash twice! He worked Friday night and received a $100 tip on a $75 tab!!! He was over the moon about that.

Holy cow! I cannot wrap my head around the money he is making! I've sat down and talked to him about the importance of saving for a rainy day, as all weeks aren't going to be as profitable.

He'll be living at home his first year of college to attend a local university to get his generals done. I'm sooooo happy about that!

If I wasn't so old, I'd be tempted to do this as my side gig. He loves the people he works with and his regular customers. I'm so happy for him!!!

An eight foot row of green bush beans was planted using the board method. It may be a week or so early, since beans like warm weather, but the long term forecast is favourable. The board keeps moisture from evaporating due to a hot Sun. It will be removed at the first sign of germination. The board is on raised cross pieces to prevent the emerging plants from striking the underside of the board.

Should REALLY be over at my Mom's putting in HER flowers while she's on vaca. But, I am sooo sore from doing my gardening........and we're supposed to get a thunderstorm this afternoon.

Our college aged son is home for two weeks. He is in need of some clothes. I was thinking I was being frugal when I suggested he go to label shopper first as they have good prices. He came home yesterday after visiting with friends after church and said he had stopped into Goodwill and Salvation army(but they were closed) to look for clothes. I was so proud! My husband said nothing. To him those stores mean we are poor. DS said to me recently. I don't think people realize how little they really need to live. I am one proud mamma today.

I found this article on Slate last night - I thought it was interesting. And amazing - for once Louisiana apparently did something right - LOL! There are pics of some of the birds the writer would choose for each state and links to pics at an ornithology site that aren't in the article itself. Opinionated, but fun, and the writer probably does have a point.

So here's something for all the bird lovers and bird watchers --
