DS14 is allowed out until 8 on a school night, 8:30 otherwise. The only exception is a school function such as a dance when he may get home at 9. He's fine with this. There is nothing in this town for kids to be doing out late anyhow except look for trouble.

My kids really don't go out much without us but when they do the curfew depends on what they are doing and who they are with. If it's a school function like a dance then they must be home when it's over. However I would reserve the right to make it earlier if I felt I needed to. For instance if they had a dance at the high school that started at 7 and didn't end until 2am I would set the curfew at midnight.
My dd is very good about calling me to tell me where they are, what they are doing and if anything has changed in the plans. Ds is 13 and doesn't do much other his basketball team or a school function.
When I was in high school curfew was 11pm...period! The only time I got to stay out later was prom night and then I still had to be home as soon as it was over(so maybe got home at 11:30 at the latest). My parents were so strict that if you didn't get home by 11 you didn't get in(none of us has ever been allowed to have a key to our parents home either)! My brother finally bought a camper top and sleeping bag for his truck so he could come home later and sleep in the driveway in the back of his truck LOL.S

I didn't have a concrete curfew either AND I had the car!! My parents trusted me but they did ask where I was going, with whom and when I'd be home. I wasn't one to 'hang' at the mall or theatres ether, mostly at my friend's houses with their parents at home. Also, when I didn't have the car, my dad would drop me and pick me up as well so that he knew all the details: with whom, where etc.
Weeknights I'd be very close to home. Fri/Sat nights I'd be home by 1am the latest.2012: The Year Of The Purge!

Our house has "adults" who still live at home. The rule is 9 p.m. if they are in school. If they are working- it is whenever their shift is done and the drive home. On off nights it is midnight no matter how old they are. There are the occassional longer nights for prom or parties but those are made case by case and depend heavily on how responsible the person has been lately.
