Update on bathroom door
The latch has been fixed.
Once you open up the lock cartridge it is a mechanical puzzle. It only needed a spring which we found at the local hardware store for $1.28. While Hubby was in the lock cartridge, he investigated the locking mechanism which is a 1915 dead blot system not lock and key like the other doors in the house. There is no way to open the door from the outside, if someone got locked in. The a previous own must have glued the lock so it wouldn't work, looked like it had been done on purpose. Hubby scraped off the glue and the locking mechanism locks now too.
So $1.28 and a bit of time working out the "lock puzzle" (Hubby loves puzzles especially ones like that He is good at them too)
Oh and a side note when working with a 1915 house the local hardware store is your friend, the local home improvement store not so much."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

The hardware store has come to the rescue several times with our older home. My hardware friend doesn't so much as bat an eyelash when I come in with strange house issues.

Some of our hardware guys hide when I come in looking for stuff to do my weird projects!
Congrats on the fix! I love when that happens! It's not only frugal but such a satisfying feeling to fix what most people would consider junk. I felt the same way when I was able to fix our fridge last fall with a $7 part, when everyone was telling me we had to go spend $2,000 on a new fridge.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hubby generally doesn't ask the hardware guys for help. He just shows the children the part he is looking for and sends them and me on a seek and find game right along with him.
He reminds the children that that it might be part of ( packaged with) something else and it might not say it is for the the same thing.
When we had to replace our claw foot tub faucet. We took a picture of the faucet (and measurements too) but the picture was the important part. We all looked high and low this time including a hardware guy. One of the children found one that would work. It looked just like it and had that same measurements. It was found in the camper repair section."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS
