I had a meeting with DD's school councilor today and we weren't even talking about puberty and she recommended the American girl book as well. So I am going on Sunday to buy a copy. Thank you for all your advice. I don't know what I would do with out you ladies!

My parents played this game. My dad had to handle the talk with my three brothers. Once they got the talk, my mom would give me the talk.

I am 26 years old. I have two kids. I have yet to have 'the talk'.

My sister had "the talk" with me when I had my first menstruation. My mother had talked to her (my sister being four years older than me) some years earlier. My sister thought my mother's "talk" was so terrible, that she (sister) didn't want me to get the same information!! Not sure if she and my mother agreed that my sister would do the talking, but never got any info from my mother, and it was nice talking to someone close to my own age.

I purchased a bag of teen maxi pads and expained to my dd -at the time 9 - what was going to be happening. I didn't want her to be at school and totally freakout. I told her to call me and I would check her out of school...if it happened at school. She seemed Ok with it and hasn't asked me a question since.

This was supposed to be the deal dh and I had too. But he has yet to even attempt the talk with ds so I guess I will do it. He assures me he knows all about it because they discussed it in health class. I have two books here on the topic that I bought for dd and I am going to let him read them and then we will talk about it. He embarrasses much easier then dd did LOL. So I think this is that is the best approach with him.

Default he probably does know all about it..

my daughter who is 10 and in the fifth grade has already had this discussion in health class...she seems to know all about it right down to the little things....ugh! I think it helps that some of her peers have already started their cycle so it will be easier for her to handle....I was like 15 so i am hoping we have a few years...the doc says there are not signs of maturity at this point...Phew!

I talked about changes in both sexes and other personal type things from the time they could talk. So, by the time anything started happening with any of them, they already knew what was going on.

When our oldest son was about 10 or so he was going through the "I don't change my underwear" phase...told him, he'd better start changing them or I'd know when he went through puberty because, his PH would stick to the crud in his underwear. After that he changed those suckers sometimes twice a day LOL. I know it sounds horrible but, it worked...and I never had to tell the rest of the crew to change their drawers either .

I was 9 when I hit puberty and I think that she won't be very long. Once a month she complains of her tummy hurting I started tracking it and sure enough it is about the same time every month.
DD intellectually is above average but emotional is about 7 maybe a little younger. I explained what is happening to a degree but still have not spoken to her about all of what puberty entails because I don't want to scare her.
So moms when it came to your daughters was there a book you read to them or did you just discuss it? I can't figure out how to explain it to her so that she does not get terrified. I know her and even what we have discussed upsets her because she says she does not want to grow up.
I was raised Catholic so my family never brought up any of these issues when I was a kid, I learned about these things in the 5th grade when we had a class on it. I was a late bloomer, I think my daughter will be as well. She's going to be 11 this year we have not had any of these issues yet. Just give her the minimum amount of details you can, you don't want to make her worry or stress her out.

Thank you so much for the recommendation of the American Girl book! I would have never even known what it was until it was mentioned here. I happened to find a copy for .50 at a thrift store today for dd!!! I would never have even looked at the book if I hadn't read this thread. Now dd will have her own book to learn about the facts of life.
