Would you let a newborn
sleep on their tummy? With all the talk about SIDS,I'm afraid to let Jayme sleep on her stomach. Ashley was born in 1989 and always slept on her stomach, but I don't think you heard so much about SIDS or so much about them being on their tummy was bad back then.
I'm asking because there's a thread on babycenter about this and with every mother that posted, all of their babies (born in June) are sleeping on their tummy. I may try for Jayme's naps, but I'm to afraid something would happen. I could never forgive myself if something happened to her.
What's your opinion on this?

No tummy sleepers here. The thought of SIDS is so scary I never let them.

I keep mine on their backs until they start rolling over. Better safe than sorry.

Tammy, both of my older girls ('89 and '91) slept on their tummies. I didn't let Courtney do it, I was afraid of SIDS too. Now that she is old enough, she sleeps any which way. I would lay her on her back. She'll be fine!

It seems like this changes from year to year. When my girls were born, '97 and '99, it was recommended that babies sleep on their sides. We had one of those sleep wedges to keep them from rolling over too.
What does her pediatritian say?

I think it depends on the baby. Ds was able to lift his head off the bed shortly after he was born. He turns his head from side to side when he's on his tummy. Sometimes he seems more comfortable that way and sleeps better, other times he prefers his back. He has an intermittant sinus thing going on and he sometimes gags on the mucus when he's on his back, so I put him on his tummy. I don't want him to aspirate.

I would do what you feel comfortable with..
My oldest slept on her tummy as soon as she could roll over since she would move that way..
The triplets always slept on their tummy, they slept better that way BUT were also on Apnea monitors so I was never afraid since if there were to be a problem the alarm would go off...

Mine always slept on their tummies because I was afraid they would spit up and I wouldn't know it and they would choke to death. There is always some fear with an infant in which way to lay them is best.
I think your peditrician would be your best source for information.~*Michelle*~

When dd was a baby, she slept on her side with a wedge to keep her in place. I was scared of SIDS too. There really is no correct way, just whatever you as the mom feels is best. Good luck.

SEPT 1994 DS slept on his side with a wedge. It was the "thing"
May 1998 DD#1 slept on her back, I couldn't find the wedge and wasn't gonna buy another one.
July 2000 DD#2 would not sleep on her back or on her side, so on her tummy she went, I did check her more than the other 2 while she was sleeping but that is what worked for her.
So I say you try for the back but if it is not your babies thing you gotta take precautions and do what works for you.

I had my kiddo's sleep on their sides too. The pediatrician had suggested it in both kids (1999 and 2002) , Erick had stayed on his side to sleep still to this day. Hannah as soon as she could squirm away from the wedge, she was onto her back on her own.

Maria sleeps on her back if she's in bed, or sometimes on her tummy on my chest if we fall asleep on the couch in the middle of the night. I try not to do that too often now, though, since she squirms around a lot when sleeping.
When she first came home we had instructions from the Special Care Nursery (she was there two weeks) to put her on her back or her side in her bed. We used rolled up blankets to prop her on her side, just the way the nurses did in the hospital. She really seems to prefer to be on her back, though.
And no, I wouldn't put her to bed on her tummy... the SIDS thing scares me, too.

Both were on their back, now both are over 2(lauren is way over) so after they could roll over and lift their heads they were on their tummy if they wanted too.but they mostly slept on their backs or curled up untill after age 2 which now its with their butts in the air.

I always put Julia to sleep on her back...I'm a huge worrywart and was terrified of SIDS. Now, at 2 and 1/2, she sleeps on her tummy to start, and we usually find her buried under the covers in the morning.
