Last Minute Company
Does last minute company drive you nuts?
If it's someone just coming to visit me, I'm fine with it however they may find the house a mess.
But if you are coming to spend the night, I want a bit of notice, more than a few hours - please.
Last night at 8:30, Mel's niece from GA called and said she has a job interview in Greensboro, NC on Friday. (It's about 1 hour from here). She wanted to know if:
1. Could she come and spend the night?
2. If one of us could watch her baby (18 mths old) while she went to the interview on Friday morning and probably afternoon as well?
3. Did I think I could get off work to watch the baby? (Nope but Mel is off on Fridays, serves him right for being a grouch this week)
4. Could her little sister (age 9) come too?
5. She thought she might want to stay all weekend - okay?
Now my house is clean, but not clean enough for me to be comfortable about a baby running loose. Lots of breakables, dog and cat hair, dog and cat food, etc. I cleaned well into the night last night and got up early this morning to vac. On top of it all, Mel asked that I find the baby some toys to play with that would be safe for her and to put the rest of the unsafe toys up. Oh yeah, he wanted to know if I could go buy a baby gate (Nope, don't have time - use a piece of board with a sheet over it).
Would this make you nuts? or am I just being overly sensitive. This girl is bound to have had more notice of the job interview than just a few hours. Why couldn't she have called earlier in the week so we could plan for this? Youngsters - just no manners at all.
Anyway - I'll have company all weekend. So much for getting anything else done.

Pat,
I think that Mel's niece was a little presumptuous asking if you guys could get off work to watch HER baby and if she could bring her little sister also and possibly stay the whole weekend. That's downright tacky behavior.
Praying that things go smoothly and that you can enjoy this visit with them despite the rough start.

On top of it all, this is the weekend that Ryan and I and one of her buddies is going to Roanoke to see the play "School House Rock". Tickets are already bought and it's assigned seats. Guess Mel will have to entertain them while I go to the play. I am not giving up the tickets, they were not cheap! and I can't get more!

I would've politely said we had plans and wouldn't be home but there's a Motel 6 down the road

Pat, How old is Mel's niece? I only ask because most of the time this does not suprise me if they are under 25...for some reason DH cousin sometimes likes to try and pull stuff like this, but we will have nothing of it.
I would be a little peterbed too! You have lives right? I would say that spending the night is fine, but having to babysit for a long time wouldn't set well with me. I would tell her that your husband would be free to watch her child for her interview but that's all. I have learned to finally say no these past few years and how I've had a lot of practice, can you tell!
Good luck Pat!!!!
