Anyone Have a Spouse with Bipolar?
Does anyone else have a spouse who is living with bipolar? My DH was diagnosed with Type II Bipolar about a month ago -- finally, after five years of stress and fighting on both our parts, we know what the problem is!
Since he was diagnosed, our relationship has improved 10 fold. He's much more attentive to me, helps me out around the house a whole lot more and is even cooking!! Three weeks ago he made a zucchini loaf without even using a recipe! I was so impressed.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice for us now that we know what is going on. DH is on medication (lithium) now and we've got his addiction to video games (Yes, it was a literal addiction) under control. He's incredibly strong willed.
Just wondering if anyone has any stories or ideas to share.
Thanks and Bright Blessings!

I have a few family members with bi-poler and it can be such a challenge. Good to hear he's finally getting the help he needs. I can just imagine how relieved you must feel right now!

I have a BIL and a SIL who are both bi-polar...Make sure he stays on meds...he will want to stop after he's "feeling better". Don't let him! It's a common occurance w/ bi-polorism.
Sending lots of hugs and prayers!

I have several family members and friends with this. It can be really hard on relationships until the person realizes that they need help and gets it.

Yes. My Dh has it too. Plus genrelized anexity disorder. Make sure he stays on his meds!We had 12 years of off and on pure hell! Then finally we found a doctor that would and could help. It has been 3 years and so much has changed for us. He is a total different man. Good Luck to you both! You will enjoy getting to "know him again.
Bright Blessings

My mom has bipolar. Definitely make sure that he stays on the meds, and if he doesn't think the meds are working anymore, experiment with other meds. My mom had to experiment a lot to find one that works for her.

Can say it enough, he has to stay on meds. Also, be prepared for the need for constant blood testing and med adjusting. What works today may be abismal next month. I use to work for a psychiatrist. You and other family members will benifit from a good support network. See if there is a National Alliance For The Mentally Ill in your area. Also, you may benifit from case management. You get someone trained to deal with all issues relating to the illness: med management, hospitalization, disability insurance, medical insurance, etc. These people have already delt with all the red tape and know what to expect. They can be a great resource!! I'm glad things are better for you. HTH
