My First Playdate
Okay, so it's Julia's first playdate, but it's a first for me, as well.
A little girl from Julia's nursery school has invited Julia to come over to play for a few hours tomorrow. I'm so excited for her and she is just beside herself. It's her first playdate. I'm dropping her off at 12:15 and then going back to get her a few hours later. I'm just hoping that she behaves herself and listens to her friends mother. She is a very good girl, but she gets so excited and sometimes forgets herself. Then again, she IS only 4!
So, wish her luck!

I bet Julia will have so much fun! Wait till you pick her up and she talks nonstop about what they did. It will be so exciting for you and her.

Exciting - for both of you! I hope she enjoys herself. After the playdate, on the way home, I bet she asks if she can invite her friend to your home.

Well, all went well until pick-up time. When Julia is sad something ends, she always says "I didn't enjoy this and I don't want to do it again." I guess it's her way of taking control of the situation.
Anyway, I went to get her and she started to cry. Then she said, "I didn't have a good time with you, Hannah." Poor Hannah was so confused. Luckily, Hannah's mom is a wonderful woman who totally understood. She told Julia that she was a great friend to have over and that she is welcome anytime. I told Hannah that she could come play at our house anytime. The entire time the mom's are doing damage control, Julia is just continuing with "You can't come to my house, blah, blah, blah." I was very disappointed, but tried not to get angry. I understand why she does it, and we've been working on helping her express herself differently. Hopefully we got through because last night she said to me, "Next time I play at Hannah's when it's over, I'll tell her that I'm sad to be leaving but that she can come over to our house soon." I told her I thought that would be great. We'll see if she applies it!
Anyway, they had a great time during the actual playdate.

Poor Julia, I am glad she was starting to understand how to express herself in words to you, when she was more calm later on in the evening. I hope her friend will understand too. I hope the next play date is a huge success!

I'm so pleased she enjoyed it. Luckily the other mum was understanding too. There is so much to learn at 4 years of age.
