    Default Signing with your child

Does anyone else use sign language with your child? How many signs does your child know?

Well Grace is 2 now... The only one she still does is Please.

We started her at maybe 6 months old - We taught her (and she used until she began speaking well): Please, More, Milk, Eat, and she understood NO

Those are the basics and she loved being able to communicate. She spoke fairly early, so we didn't really continue with the signing beyond those basics.

Michael is 4 months and we began with "milk" a few days ago. He just giggles like crazy when I do it while nursing. lol

Well, with my one son with significant learning/speech issues we did it to help him be able to communicate. We did : all the colours, more, please, thankyou, sorry, stop, no, play, who, what, when, where, when, all the animals, and more I am sure.....anyway - his speech is much better (I think it's great - you probably wouldn't understand him though.......(he has FAS, alcohol affected his speech ability). Now we are doing it with Audrey (our 18 month old from China) she was adopted by us at 11 mos. she heard chinese for 11 mos, english only 7 months so far. She can say mama (course she says it to everything!) She says kaka for kitty kat. She can sign more, please, thankyou and all done. Her language will be a bit behind for awhile, but she is able to communicate with signing. And she uses them correctly too!

Zoe knows dog, which she does a million times every time she sees the dog or the cat, and milk, which means pretty much any kind of food. But she's got the gist of those two

One of the twins was speech delayed. His speech therapist had him work on signs before his speech "came in". He only really learned a few signs (please, thank you, more, drink, and eat).

DH and I use "potty" ('t' sign held up by your head and twisted or shaken back and forth) when we had to take one of them to the potty and we were across the room (or in a crowded store). It was great to let the other know what was going on without having to shout or point or whatever.
