    Red face Quick soccer question

OK, I'm trusting you ladies not to laugh at me. Nobody in my family or close friends plays soccer, so I am clueless.

DD is going to her very first soccer practice tonight. We were told that she should wear shin guards that fit under socks. Ok, we bought those, and the socks.... but is she supposed to wear socks under the shin guards, too? Or just over top? It seems to me like they'd rub her legs a lot without socks underneath them... but with two pairs of socks, she'd have huge legs.

I feel dumb asking this, but I'll feel worse if we arrive at practice and she's got them on wrong because her mom is clueless!

EDITED TO ADD: She has two pairs of soccer socks. One is adult sized, and would probably fold down at her knee to double back and cover the shin guards... maybe that's the idea?

When DS was 4 or 5 he played and only wore 1 pair. I don't think he ever complained about them rubbing his legs.

DD has to wear knee pads for her indoor volleyball league and they do not rub her. Not exactly the same, but similar.

Hope she has a great time!!!

The trick with shin guards and socks is this:

Put the socks on. Pull them up so they are right over your daughters knees.

Fit the shinguards over her calves (with buckles at back of leg) so they are sitting on TOP of the sock

Then roll the top of the sock down so it finishes just below the bottom of the shin guard. This way the shin guard stays in place, the sock doesn't ride anywhere, and your daughter can play comfortably.

No socks under shin guards. Shins guards go rigth against the shins and socks over the top.

My DH coaches our 2 kids and he says you can put a regular pair of socks on under the shin guards if they are irritating. But according to our league rules all shin guards must be under the soccer socks (no folding allowed). Each is probably different. HTH!

Thanks, all. All the kids there tonight had various different types of shin guards and socks, so I think whatever way is comfortable is OK. Tonight we used the smaller socks and put the shin guards directly on her leg, but I think next time we'll try the big socks and roll them down the way OzFreeBird described and see if they're more comfortable for her.

You can buy socks with the shin guard sewn into them. They are great you can wash them just the same and you have less to keep up with. My kids have never had a problem with the guards irritating their legs. Oh and welcome to the world of soccer!
