Do your teenagers work?
My 17 yo dd's both work at local pharmacy chain about 5-10 hours a week. My 15 yo dd just got a job at a pizza shop. I now have 3 employed children. I am very proud of them. They are hard workers.

i dont have any children yet but i started working at sixteen and it was a very good experience. i was able to help out around the house with bills and buy my own things and i think it made me money smarter. - so in short, i will want my kids to pick up part time jobs when they are old enough.

My 17 year old step-daughter has a totally "cushy" dream job. Her mother is a Dr. and she is working in her office. Mainly filing. She comes and goes as she pleases and pretty much "works" when she feels like it. Great way to teach a work ethic mom

When our oldest son was in high school, he worked at a fast food chain. The middle son is 16, but does not work because of other commitments. Even during the summer, he is overbooked with other commitments. We have looked at his schedule and can't figure out where he would have time to work. So for now, we told him he doesn't have too, but if he ever quits the other commitments then he probably will be working too.

My kids are 12 and 14 and both have jobs.
First they cut grass. Right now they have three yards (all are in different areas of the city - about 10-15 miles apart)they do every other week, but are working on getting about 3-4 more. Each yard they charge $40 for. But, since their dad has to take them and haul the lawn equipment they have to pay for the gas and use of his equipment. They net around $7.50-$10 a yard.
They are also puppy pooper scoopers. They remove the poop from yards. Right now they have one poop yard that they do every other week. They charge $10 for this since it only takes like 15 minutes and can walk to this house.
We ask that they put the first $2.50 from each job into their savings. Grass has to be cut year round here, so they are able to make their money all year. We have no real winter here.Last edited by Neeley; 08-16-2007 at 02:12 PM.

DS worked at Chick-Fil-A in 10th and 11th grade. He is now in college and earns money by playing the stock market. Does that count as a job?
DD 15 will work next summer or possibly during the school year once she turns 16---depends on how her GPA is looking.

Ods just had his last day yesterday at his summer job. He is a COB. What that mean is Civilian on the Battlefield. He works with soldiers who are heading out to Iraq and Afghanistan. He plays and Iraqi. Sometimes a good Iraqi and sometimes a bad Iraq. Its a very interesting job and he can work as many hours as he wants and he makes very good money for being a summertime job. He will do this job again next summer when he is home from college.
Yds is 15. He would need a work permit to get a job and they are hard to get here. When he turns 16 which is next month it will be easier. He mows the yard of a neighbor for $$ and he has a lot of activities after school. We will see what happens when he turns 16

All 3 of my kids worked summers at the local U-Pic berry patch. They all have worked at the dance studio from the time they were 11 yo.
Oldest ds didn't work other places until he graduated -- he struggled to keep his grades up and had lots of extra curricular activities.
Middle son -- worked at a nursing home as a unit support assistant, then in dietary. He changed jobs his senior year and did data input for a local company. They paid by your output and he was one of the highest paid workers there.
Dd -- works at the dance studio, and the nursing home as a unit support assistant.

My DD is 13, and is in a volunteer position for the city with the Parks and Recreation Dept. Next year when she is 14 she will be able to have a paying job there, and it could turn into a part time job during the school year starting her freshman year.
I do not "expect" her to work nor any of my other kids, but I did have a job every summer beginning with the summer before my freshman year and had one every summer until I got my first real fulltime permanent job with KMart and stayed for 5 years. I think it helps build character and gives them a lot of responsibility.Bonnie mom to
