Okay... I am all for vaccinations... I was a child growing up in the Air Force so that was important on the travel. It almost blew me away when I read some of the ingredients in some vaxs. This was just a few months ago on the third child. Not sure if I can find the link again nor do I want too..
My son went to the doc today for his normal checkup and shots. It does break my heart with that second of pain and the cute bandaides on his legs. I took many pictures.I know it is better for their health for a short sting(I almost always cry) then my child getting some horrible disease.
I guess my question is do you think they are all neccesary in living in the US or do you think some are not?
Okay I can think of a few for certian that I agree with.... the obvious. (gah, too tired to name them, but ya know)
My doc told me to come back in a month for a flu shot for my baby at the 6 month mark..what? I realize I am from old school and the chicken pox was new for my other son.(born in 97 and for my daughter born in 92 never exsisted) My daughter got the pox and my son never did. Good great! At that time people where talking how alwful the chicken pox vaxs was and new. My son was like a guinee pig then. I will say I was glad that my son never suffered like my daughter did at 4 years old! What a nightmare it was for me and her way back then.
So what is your take and experience. Especially the flu shot on a 6 month old as I never knew there was such a thing as such a young age. I only thought it was for old people.
I'm all for it.......One of the reasons that we do not have alot of these desases(sp) is we do vacanate. I know quite a few people my age that had polio. We don't see it in my kids generation or their childrens. Two of my children got the small pox vacine. We have made it diapear here. But in 3rd world countrys we still have that threat. We still lose lives here because of the flu. I'm for it.

Oh, I agree 100%%%% Polio was the oral one in the mouth. Small pox is also one that I also agree.
Funny story is that one of my old church Pastor's as a child walked with a limp. I asked my parents(maybe 10 at that time. why) They said he had polio. He was so "Christian" that he refused it. [sad]
Don't get me wrong..I am for all vax.. I was just wanting some take an experince of some.
Okay anyone hear this commercial in their area now? There is one floating about Menegitis (sp) This commerical says never to drink after one another. What? (Salivia)That was old school if anyone here can remember that. In the 80's we passed a Coke with a smile. I guess this can be circulating again. I guess some antibiotics are overused maybe and this stuff is coming around again? Yeah! I talk to my teen about never sharing a bottle of water after track practice, but they do..just being normal children.
I think overuse of antibiotics and "antibacterial" stuff lead the way for some. My child is home with me 24/7. I realize if I would take him to a normal day care it would be 'good for him 'and build the emnu thing(not even gonna try to spell it! lol)
Now they are saying don't even give your own child over the counter cold medicine until two.
Just a happy saline drop in the nose an a vapor rub and happy sleeping!
We have given both of our sons (ages 4 & 2) flu vaccines once they were old enough. DH is an airline pilot and he brings home more bugs than if my kids were in daycare!
Flu shots are for anyone at high risk (mostly infants & the elderly - as well as anyone living with them).
Since you have older children in school, I would advise getting the baby vacinated for the flu. In a child that young, the flu could turn into RSV which could lead to hospitalization. My youngest ended up with RSV, but thankfully it wasn't that severe. We were very close to heading to the ER one night, but he finally was able to catch his breath and drift off to sleep. He wasn't 6 mos old yet, so he wasn't able to be vaccinated that year.
As for chicken pox, it can be deadly to very small infants (and harmful to pregnant women). My cousin's baby died of SIDS. He was exposed to Chicken Pox shortly before his death. We'll never know for sure, but we've always wondered if that little girl had been vacinated, would the baby have lived?
Just my .02

My daughter had a reaction to the pertussis in the DPT shot so I only let them give my youngest boy the DT part.
He's very healthy.
I worry about the mercury that they use in the DPT. My nephew is autistic and the number of children who are now autistic is very disturbing. 1 in 165. Something is wrong somewhere.
If I was raising my kids again, I don't think I'd let them get vaccinated.

There are some vaccinations we don't get because they were developed from aborted babies. MMR and chicken pox are the two that aren't even available in the US in forms derived from other means. It's frustrating, because you can get different forms of these vax in other countries but not in the US. (We can get measles and mumps as separate vax -- it's the rubella part that's completely unavailable.)

I don't know how old your kids are, but my family knew a little boy that had a reaction about 16 years ago. He died when he was about 12 years old. He was perfectly healthy until he had his shot when he was 2. After that he had seizures, severe brain damage....you name it.
When my oldest was born ( March 03 ) I asked our pediatrician and he said there were quite a few complications from one bad batch of the the Pertussis vax, so they reformulated it. Its now called the DPaT shot - I have not heard of any problems with it so far.
As for autism, its a very sad and unfortunate disease. However, I believe it is more closely tied to all of the preservatives/junk in the processed foods that we as Americans are addicted to than in the vaccines we give our children.

My kids are grown, 35, 25 and 23. It was the 25 year old that had the reaction. Even back then I had read some disturbing things about the Pertussis portion of the vaccine. I went ahead and did the first one anyway and took her home. She started crying an hour after the shot. It was high pitched and constant. She was a very happy baby and hardly fussed at all.
After an hour of not being able to soothe her I called the doctor. They didn't believe me until I put the phone by her. They were appalled. They all knew her and knew this was completely out of character.
For the booster, the doctor had already prepared the shot with the Diphtheria and Tetanus portion. We had agreed that she wouldn't be getting anymore Pertussis. My youngest didn't get it at all.
It was very frightening and I'm glad that I had a progressive pediatrician who was willing to do the research with me.

I am sort of on the fence about vaccinations. I believe that they do good. I do. But I am so leery about the future ramifications. I really worry about it. But even though the disease may not live here in the US, Perhaps someone who does abroad travel could harbor it, and if my kids aren't immunized then should they come in contact with that person...well...i'd rather them not ahve to suffer through the illness. But should they suffer long term negative effects from the immunization itself? Gah, i dunno. ack, it's alot to think about.

My DD had a seizure following a vaccination at one year. (It is suspected that it was the MMR.) so we have been a bit hesitant with vaccines since. We do get them for our children, but we do not do more than one vaccine at a time. When my DD had the seizure, we weren't sure which vaccine could have caused it since she had 3-4 vaccines at once! She also went on to have more seizures, the last one she had was when she was 3. She just turned 8 and hasn't had a single one in 5 years.
Anyway, our doctor and DD's neurologist gave her a medical exemption, so she has her shots one at a time, at least one month apart. We have done the same with our son, who is 2. He isn't yet caught up on all his vaccines but he will be by the time he is in school.
