Default We DID It! Got DS an IEP

A little background on the situation. DS has Asperger's Syndrome. It took us until he was 8 to get a diagnosis---loooong horrifying story! Anyway, we have been trying to get him an IEP since first grade. At that point mostly for OT. Every year we are denied because his IQ is at a genius level and he gets great grades. But, I knew everything else would start to interfere with his performance. Sure enough, this year the meltdowns and social issues started to effect his grades.

Well, we pushed and pushed. Went in with all kinds of printed up lists and info as to WHY he needs to learn differently. His executive function (organization, etc) section of his brain is wired differently and he's being punished for that. WRONG!

We finally did it! Oh and oh boy do I have a list of goals and specific modifications. I have had years to do my research!

Just wanted to share what is a huge victory for my son's future!

Congratulations! It's crazy how much red tape there is to just get what is best for him!

I am so glad you fought for your son! A parent is a child's strongest advocate.

His teacher actually sent us an e-mail saying how impressed she was for us standing up for his rights. Guess they must get alot who back down. Sad, but true. Not when it comes to MY son's future!

Congratulations! My DD12 does not have Aspergers but she does have a learning disability. I had to argue until I was blue in the face to get an IEP for her, and when I did it completely turned her life around. She went from scoring so low on her Grade 3 standardized test that the could not measure her on the charts to right at grade level in grade 6. When done properly, this can work miracles.

    again, congratulations!

Thats great im so glad for you. I know it takes along time here for any kid with any kind of disabilties or delayments to fight hard for specialized teachers.
Im fighting right now for my 15 yr old for peer help(resources) to home work, so far he's failing 3 subjects and had ADHD, but the hyper part has diminsihed less over the years, but not the studdying and keepeing info in there for long. Thats how he tells me how it is. And noise is major distraction especially taking exams . So now he take them in small groups with others who have similar problems. Im so glad and relieved.
I'm very proud of you that you fought it.

Good for you! I've taught many students with Aspergers Syndrome and the IEP makes a big difference for them in many classrooms.
