question about paying irs
ok we had to refile 4 years of my husbands taxes and we thought when it was all said and done it would have balanced out where we only owed 40 bucks turns out they wont aknowledge the money we were owed because it was to long to claim it but we still owe..okay we have the rebate due in July...1800.00 so i would perfer to just wait and let them deducted it..but im getting last attempt to collect notices for the $245.00 i dont have it and i do not want to pay them $100 just to set up the repayment program..(isnt that awful that they want a $100 to set up an agreement..that does not go to the balance owed...any advice or information on this area??
thanks

So you are certain that your refiling was within the time frame they stated on their website? see below.
Can you charge it? just to get it paid? Can you borrow it from a family member to then pay it back when you get your refund?
The problem with waiting~ is the IRS doesn't care to coordinate the repayment and take it out of your stimulus check-
If you wait longer, you'll have extra fees with the IRS that you don't want to incur.
They LOVE taxing you.
If you did not report all your income or did not claim a credit, you are entitled to file an amended or corrected return using Form 1040X (PDF), Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Include copies of any schedules that have been changed or any Form W-2 (PDF) you did not include. The Form 1040X (PDF) should be submitted after you receive your refund or by the due date of the return, whichever, is earlier. Generally, to claim a refund, the Form 1040X (PDF) must be received within three years after the date you filed your original return or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

I've found in the past that working with the IRS, it all depends on who you get on the phone when you call.
Sometimes, you catch someone on a good day and they will be really nice about it. If you call them and explain that you will have the money on a certain date, they will charge the interest and late fees, but if they can "expect" the money, they may give you until July, without doing anything drastic.
The best thing you can do is talk to them. Don't totally ignore them or it'll get worse. You'll never get out of the late fees and interest unless you pay it now, but if you keep the lines of communication open, they will be alot nicer about things!
I agree with frugal nurse though, if you can borrow the money from someone until your rebate check comes in, you'll be better off and you'll be able to save money on the interest from the IRS!
Good luck, let us know how it works out!

You stated you had to refile your hubby's taxes so I am assuming you amended them...if this is so the 4 years wouldn't just even themselves out. You would have to wait for the refunds for each years you were due a different amount & you would have to pay for each year that you owed. In addition to paying what you owe you are required to pay penalties & interest. The IRS only charges $45.00 to set up a payment plan and you can include all the years you owe for on one plan.
The only way they wouldn't acknowledge the money you were owed is if it is from 4 years ago...the limit is 3 years back. Try to find a way to borrow the $245 & pay them off."Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." John Lennon

If your talking stimulus check. it will go to the goverment instead of you anyhow.
They just did that with my fiance except they over paid by $400.00 now we're waiting until they send us the rest.
they said it could take up to 90 days.
If anyone owes the government they are sending the stimulus checks to the IRS.

yes thank you we were told that my husbands company filed the taxes the even took the money out of his check once, the other times we thought he was due money that it went to child support well its now been 4 years and we are no longer eligible for the money..which would not go to child support now.
no i dont have a credit card with big limits and they only have a few dollars on both..
i wouldnt want to borrow the money i guess sometime tonight or tomorrow night my husband will call and see what options we have

thanks
what happened started on 2002 we were under the assumption that my husbands past employer handled it all because they stated they would do it for us and even took money out of a check on year that we owed..the first 2 years was money due back and the other 2 or 2 years he owed..i didnt know there was a time frame on collection taxes due to you (the reason we never questioned not getting the refund is my husbands child support, which now they dont get the tax refunds) anyways i assumed when i filled the years they would off set each other and im was sure there would be some fees here and there. so the remaining balance at the time is the 245.00 which i also have to refile 2005 because they didnt get it with the package i mailed out to them but i decided to wait until after the rebate was recieved before i refiled it..i would like some of the money for things around here we need..
when i first got the bill for 245 i asked about payments and they are now $100.00, 45.00 sounds better but this is what i have been told mulitple times now.
my plan was to get the rebate minus the 245, refile 2005, make payment arrangements and pay monthly until taxes for 2008 came about

well right now we only owe 245 and the rebate is 1800.00 so it takes longer once they issue ours? i assumed irs is the ones sending it and would just subtract their money and send us the rest..is that not right? or it just takes a helluva lot longer?..we really need it and have been counting on it fore july 4th (we are getting a check not DD)

Last year we owed the IRS $504.00. We didn't have the money. I called and got an extension of 90 days. When the 90 days were up we still didn't have the money. I called again and got on a payment plan. Yes, they did charge us $105.00 for extending the plan but it wasn't due for another 30 days so we were able to come up with it. Then remaining $504.00 of the original bill I was able to make a payment plan of $10.00 a month. When the IRS lady asked how much we could reasonably pay, I told her $10.00 a month and unbelievably, she accepted it. This year when I did our taxes we got a small refund. It was enough to cover the $504.00 and also gave us another $128.00 in refund amount.
Just call them and be specific about what you can do. If it's only a matter of TIME before you can pay it off, the $100.00 "finance" charge is well worth the worry of being late."Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibity."

Yes, this is correct. Any balance you owe them at the time they cut your check will be deducted from your Stimulus Check but if it doesn't come until July and you are required to make a payment now, do what you have to to be current. You don't want to mess with the IRS. I have a neighbor who owes them $10,000 and they are in a reall mess right now as it is old debt that they didn't make the payments on.i assumed irs is the ones sending it and would just subtract their money and send us the rest..is that not right?

Oh please don't EVER count on money until it's in your hands. The reason is, it's too easily spent before you get it.we really need it and have been counting on it for july 4th
Our check is due to arrive by mail sometime in July. We hope it comes in July but we are not counting on it in any way, shape, or form. Things get too messed up when you count on money you don't have yet. Be patient and work on paying down your IRS debt before July 4. You have a whole month to come up with the $245.00. Since you owe the IRS and your stimulus check is being issued to them to reduce your debt before you even get it, it could be up to 90 days before you recieve YOUR portion. Maybe it will be quicker but you just can't count on it. KWIM? I don't mean to be a "Sad Sadie" but this is the reality of waiting on a government agency to do what YOU think should be done. It just doesn't always work out the way WE think it should.

im not counting on it to pay bills, just to get a hot water tank, to refile our 2005 taxes and pay off some medical
i wont have any extra money to pay 245 in full because personal property taxes are due, and vehicle registration which has gone up again and a dog kennel i got from my uncle for $50.00....
i guess wishful thinking i could save 100.00 in not setting up an agreement payment plan, if they just took it from the stimulus check..especially since its not that far away in the furture for them to issue..pentailty and interest arent that bad on it, that was all included when they sent the bill because we were late filing...
im going to try and get my husband to call tonight i cant because its before we were married they wont talk to me

yes we messed up in april, and we planned on working on that this month but then our health insurance which was already 600 a month is now an additional 65.00 a week..really tightened us up and refiguring the bills for this month..
we might be having some extra money this weekend but its really hard getting my husband on board sometimes..and i already need to go back to the eye doctors im out of contacts and have no glasses that i could use to go anywhere..they havent been updated since i was in highschool..so..i will see what happens with the extra money, its really more my husbands because he has plans for some of it..he sold his boat and of course its not final until the guy shows up with the money..

Tammy- I see that someone else did your tazes for you? did you pay that person? is that person a CPA or anything like that?
If so... THEY are responsible for the error. NOT you.
We've had the same accountant for the last 20 years (man! she's gotten old!) but he is held responsible for any errors in filing. (for as long as we both shall live)
