I can't even afford worms.
That's how broke we are.
Dh started a new job last month and we moved from Oklahoma to Austin, TX. Cost of living here is kicking our butts. We got his paycheck today and after going through all the bills and figuring out I'll have to pay one with a credit card (
) just so we can have $100 for food and gas for the next 2 weeks. $50 needs to go towards gas so DH can get to work. We were going to tag his motorcycle so he can start driving it to save gas but we can't this month. At least I did a bit of stockpiling last month so we'll be okay with food I hope.
I was going to start a compost bin this weekend but I can't afford to buy the red worms from a bait shop. This just sucks.
I just feel like going to bed and crying. I haven't been around FV much and I'm kicking myself for it now. We are in a bad place and trying to find a way out.

hope things improve fast.
for a regular compost you do not need worms
If you are making a worm bin then ofcourse you need worms and red wigglers are the kind to get.. but you can find them in the quantities online ( ebay) you need for a worm bin more of an outlay but you need minimum 1000 to get going good.
and I agree red wiggler worms are not cheap.

Oh my....and Austin is a very expensive city to live in. Can you move back to Oklahoma? I have been thinking off and on related to moving from Texas to Oklahoma due to the lower cost of living.
I am not sure what to say I am just sending you a hug.

I just started piling the stuff up on the ground when I started our compost pile. The worms came up out of the ground. I never did ever buy them. If we did find them around the yard, I would have the boys take them over to the compost pile.

Sorry to hear things are so tight.
Could you maybe sell something on craigslist? Babysit neighbor kids? Mow a lawn? Anything to make up some extra $$ in the mean time?
Sending you big hugs!
Keep your chin up!

Keeping you in my thoughts.
A note on the worms -- just start the compost pile without them. "If you build it, they will come". No need to BUY worms.
Just start your pile with grass clippings, garden cuttings, dead leaves, any fruit and veggie cuttings (watermelon rinds, the ends of celery you cut off, old lettuce you did not eat and you would normally throw away), dryer lint, ripped up newspaper, ripped up empty toilet paper rolls, ripped up empty paper towel, rolls, used tea bags, used coffee grounds.
You will be amazed at what all that turns into -- and how empty your trash cans are.
All the best to you!Jen

You don't really need worms to start your composting. Make your pile and add them later.
Hope you get some relief soon!

Sorry that things are so tight for you guys.
A move is always expensive but hopefully you'll adjust after a month or 2 of living under control. Lots of good info here to help.
