Whew! Layoff scare...
Yesterday when DH got to work, rumors were flying that his company was getting ready to make some cuts. The rumor was that they were going to be laying off 3 guys. Well, this sent Dh into panic mode, because he is in the bottom 3 as far as seniority goes, so since they are union, if the make the cuts (that aren't performace based cuts) he'd be one of the ones to go.
So, after working for about an hour yesterday and totally stressing about it, bless his heart, he called his boss. He figured knowing was better than not knowing, and at least if we knew he was going to get laid off, we could tighten the budget further, while he was still getting paychecks.
So he called his boss and told him he had heard the rumors and just wanted to know one way or the other what was going to happen, so he could prepare (I think DH was pretty sure he was getting laid off).
Luckily, his boss was totally honest with him. He said "YOU have nothing to worry about. YOUR fine." DH said his emphasis was heavily on the YOU part. So DH thinks that was a pretty good indicator that some people are getting laid off, but luckily it won't be him.
At the end of the day, when he got back to the shop, his other boss called him into the office (which again, made him panic). He reassured DH that he was doing great, he was "safe" from lay-offs. He has the longest and crappiest routes, yet the upper management realizes that he comes to work every day, on time with a smile and is truely happy to be there. He never gripes about anything, and is always happy to help out on the other routes, long after many of the other guys have gone home.
Which is all true, DH is truely thankful that he has this job. Alot of the other younger guys take it for granted, but DH knows that a job this good is hard to come by, and I was glad to hear that at least his supervisors realize how thankful he is to have this job, and that he pours his heart into it every day.
So for now, he is fine. It'll be interesting to see what happens though. They always lay people off on Fridays, so we'll see what happens today. DH doesn't understand how they can lay anyone off, becuase they are already short handed, but if they do, it'll mean more OT for him, becuase he'll have to pick up the slack on the routes they cut.

Sarah,
I can imagine how scary that was for you both.
Glad it has worked out well.
Also as a bonus, your DH has heard that his hard work is being recognised which is always good.

Wow. Scary. My brother just survived a layoff. Back in 2000, I didn't (the company went belly up about five months later) but I'm still standing!

Thanks everyone! Luckily, they really can only let so many go, without running into trouble (for those who don't know, he is a garbage man)...They have contracts, and routes that need to be done every single day. As it is now, they are shorthanded, to get everything done.
I'm still waiting to hear from him after work, but at lunch it said it sounded like it was going to be a couple of the guys who deliver the construction dumpsters. Which I guess makes sense, becuase construction has come to a grinding halt here...so there aren't as many dumpsters to be delivered.
I'm still holding my breath until he gets home just to be sure...but it looks good!

I'm glad he is appreciated by his supervisors. It can make a world of difference knowing that.
I also offer him my long distance thanks for doing the job he's doing. It's an unglamorous job and very hard work, but how much we depend on all the sanitation people. I once heard a lecturer, who was in San Francisco at the time, comment that he would rather live in San Francisco without doctors then without plumbers. I feel the same way about all the appreciated folk who do these jobs, day in and day out. They don't get nearly the respect and thanks they deserve.
Ok. Off my soapbox. And I'm really happy for you that he survived the cuts.Donna
