My sil was laid off last Friday (posted about that), well last night during a video call with my son he told me his company will be closing its doors in 4-6 weeks ugh!!! At least the company let their employees know in advance and didn't just surprise them.
He and his family moved from Michigan to North Carolina for work two years ago and now this! He looked so sad & worried and I couldn't even give him a hug. If he can't find something down there to hold them over until next year then he said he'd be coming back to Michigan. There aren't any jobs to speak of here either, but at least they'd be closer to family.
I sure hope the economy picks up soon, this is getting scarier by the minute. I remember the late 70's & early 80's and even those times don't compare to what's happening now.
I sure hope he finds work real soon! That must have been so hard for you to be able to see him, but not give him a big ol' "mom hug". Bless your heart! :hugz:
Thank you all for your good wishes. My dh & I have talked about it and we are willing to allow them to come and stay with us if it gets to that point. But, here's hoping it doesn't. I can't imagine adding 2 more adults & 3 kids to my household, not to mention their cat & dog...but, you do what you have to do when the circumstances require it.
They probably wouldn't head this way until after school lets out, so that gives it a few months. We also have our travel trailer that we bought last year, so they'd be able to have a spot to have privacy. I can't imagine that it'd be any fun to have to move back in with your parents when you are in your 30's & have a family of your own. My son is pretty resourceful, so I'm pretty sure he'll figure something out.

mombottoo,
When you are unemployed - the unemployment rate is a 100% no matter what anybody says. I was unemployed from June thru October and understand that feeling. But I'm back at work and your son will be too.
There are jobs out there and the economy isn't as bad as the doomsayers would have you believe. According to yesterday's paper - in the early 80's, I think it was 1981, unemployment in oregon was 12.7% today it is hovers around 9%.
What I am trying to say is our economy ISN'T as bad as it's been since the 'depression'. Its been worse than it is now - when the unemployment level was high in the early 80's so were interest rates - they were in the 14's and working people were walking away from their homes because they ended up being upside down - some of what is going on now.
Your son will find something - it may not pay as much as he was making - but there are jobs.
Oh, I'm sure both of them will find jobs eventually...they are both very resourceful. My son though moved away to "work" and now he is so far from home...sometimes when you are going through tough times it's just easier if you are around you family & people who can give you support.
I vc'd with my son last night and he is really depressed, more so because the company said 4-6 weeks...now, they are done next Friday instead. The company decided it would be cheaper for them not to have to pay for medical for March...son just had major surgery on his mouth (all of his teeth removed) and doesn't even go back for a recheck until March 5th!!! To show you the type of guy he is...he had surgery Friday & was back at work Monday morning!
COBRA is an option, and my dh & I decided that we will foot the bill for his COBRA payment until he gets his mouth taken care of.
Your son is lucky to have you guys to help him during this time.
