Fortunately I choose a good man to marry and we were responsible enough not to bring a child into the world while we were in deep financial distress, so our recent hard times haven't been too bad at all. We count our blessings every day!!
I can remember two extremely hard times. Once was when I was in college. I came home to visit and found that the gas and phone were shut off because my mother couldn't pay the bills (my dad choose his addictions over us and wasn't contributing anything but drama at the time). I still vividly remember being huddled by the fireplace to keep warm (This was in January-in New England!)
Another was a few years later. I'd just graduated and come home to find my mom was ill. She was finally rushed to the hospital a few days later with heart problems. The phone was still shut off so I had no way of telling family. After spending all day in the ER with her, she was admitted to CCU. I called family from the hospital and then went home. As I got to my house one of the neighbors yelled for me to get over to their house quick. I did and found my dad on the floor having a seizure and the DTs. He was taken to the hospital as well-and a different one from my mom. I was totally alone in the house with no money, no transportation, no phone, no nothing. The next morning I found out that my entire family (aunts/uncles/cousins) had rushed to the hospitals to see my parents but not one of them bothered to come by the house and check on me. That was about the lowest I've ever been as I realized what it's like to be completely alone in the world.

I am going through my hardest time right now. As many of you know I have been laid off since October 2008 (almost 2 years) I will receive my very last unemployment check next wednesday and it will only be for 1 week. I have been very lucky that I was able to receive it for so long and I am greatful for that. I was able to start watching 2 children to help make a little extra money, but I just lost 1 last week (her grandfather is sick so the fam movied back to Canada). I was lucky that I was able to have our mortgage modified, but am worried now where the money is going to come from. I don't make enough from babysitting to pay on the house each month. If it wern't for the fact my parents gave us the 20% to put down on it 3 years ago, I would just walk away. But how do you tell your parents you basically through out 30k of their money? (Agreement was that we paid them back when we had the money or sold the house) We still owe 106k on the house and in our neighborhood houses are all the same and only worth about 90. So we really can't sell (losing 30k of parents and still owing 16k when said and done) DH is looking for work (been unemployeed since April) and he does not get UIA (only 5 people in the company so they did not have to pay for unemployment benefits) Just this week he has applied for 30+ jobs. I have applied and applied until my hand goes numb from looking and submitting. I have the "length of time without employment" working against me. I am going to be turning the cable off when the next bill comes due on the 16th of this month and looking into bankruptsy for everything but our house. I hate to do this but feel we have no other choice. Our DD is starting to act out and I think it has to do with the stress she feels from us. DH and I are constantly fighting and the TV has become the babysitter while we are looking for work. I hate that things have gotten so bad and feel horrible. I just hope that one of these places hire us and we can get back on our feet. We were doing so good in 2007 (hence the reason for the home purchase) but still using credit cards and going in debt "because we have jobs" and now 3 years later we are coming appart at the seams.

I would have to say our low point is right now. Our little girl is 6 months and since I have stopped breast feeding everything goes to her food. I have to look for change around the house to buy her formula and sometimes we have to go with out. We can't afford our home and the bank wont help so foreclosure is any day now. My health insurance and my daughters was to much so now we do not have any and no one will give us any!
Not sure what we will do but as long as our little one is fed and okay that is all I care about!

Fired from my job, wife working part-time only, no savings, no credit, checking account overdrawn by more than $1,200 on a combination of overdraft fees and a "payday advance" the bank provided that I had been taking out every two weeks for months. Several utility bills on the very near verge of shutoff.
At that point, we were being killed more by the constant late fees, overdrafts and old debts more than we were by our current expenses.
The only thing to do was, as my Dad advised me, "stop trying to spin the plates, let them drop and pick up the pieces." So that's what we did. Everyone got their money eventually, but no one got it when they wanted it.

If you asked me this question a year ago it would have been a totally different answer but seeing as I just got a letter today that totally did not say what I was expecting it to I'd say right now is my low.
I really can't stomach the thought of explaining to my parents why we are moving.
