So one of our big trees MUST come down. We live in the city and its close to the property line etc, so it must be done professionally. We insist on only letting someone with their own insurance do it, therefore we cannot call a handy man type person to do it. If they damage the neighbours building or get insured it would be a worse mess than had we spent a little extra and had it done properly. So anyways dh got a quote today ..$850.00 ... ahhh just what we need right now ... no real EF so on the line of credit it goes ...
Shop around and get more quotes! My brother found a reputable company that gave him a great quote and did a wonderful job. It just took some time and effort.
Hi Wendy,
Tree cutting is very expensive here too. Are there any other companies you can call for competitive estimates?
I agree that a company with their insurance is the best way to go. Good luck!
We had one other quote $300 for the branch ... but the fact is that the tree has to come down .. tis diseased and once that branch comes down the rest won't be long after .. as its a V type .. hard to describe it .. asked dh to get at least one more quote to see if its comparable .. these quotes dont include taking the wood away either etc .. we'll just do that ourselves .. we'll dry some for firewood and i'm sure we can sell / give away some as well ..
We have the same situation. The tree is between our 2 houses so they have to cut it limb by limb, lowering each one down. They can bring a hi=lo type in but it would wreck the lawn too. Our quote was $1000. a few years ago.
Try and console yourself w/ the fact that the total will seem small if you have to pay for damages due to it coming down on its own. I wish I had taken ours down when the house next door was empty. Now we have snotty neighbors to deal w/ too.
WOW this is so similar .. th part about wishing we did it while the house next door was empty . now we have snotty arrogant neighbours who will complain the entire time about their lawn .. ahhh
We had a branch endangering the power lines and had an estimate. $350 just for the branch. We called the power company and told them it was in danger of coming down on the primary. They sent a crew out. Cost to us? Nothing! Happy dance. Good luck and hugs.
If it is because of any utility line they will 'usually' take it down for you. Better them take it down than have it take the power out during a storm. If this is the case, worth a call to try.
Also, if you can find out who does the tree work for the utilities.......they often do stuff on the side....and will take it down in their 'off hours'
It is expensive.....I have done nothing but take trees down here.....had one utility guy take down a fir tree, took the maple down myself, had help with a plum and cherry, and had the pros take two HUGE poplar trees down.
Get the quote WITHOUT them hauling off the wood but have them cut it into about three foot OR LESS lengths.
THEN put it on CL as free unless it is a good burning wood. I never had ONE BIT of problem getting rid of any of my wood and two HUGE trees were poplar!! (.....a worthless soft wood, that burns hot and fast.......but doesn't 'pitch up' the chimney as bad as pine.) GOOD LUCK!
I am so perplexed by this. DH has done a lot of woodworking in our house and we made our countertops out of poplar, which was more expensive than oak and is very hard, dense, heavy wood. It is one of the two types of lumber available for stair treads at our home-building store, the other being oak. Perhaps there are different types of poplar around the country.
maybe 10 - 15 feet from their garage .. the tree is high though and our neighbour is not so nice .. he'll be out there 'complaining' the entire time anyone does it ugh .. will prob have to call the police when we do have it done(he's that bad) .. its kind of behind the neighbours garage (not beside it) .. he's resodded the top half of his backyard (the back half is just weeds), so he'll be really really picky about any stick that potentionally falls there .. he shop vacs every inch of his garage quite often with the smallest nozzel of his shop vac .. so thats what we are dealing with
We had the same problem a few years ago...we had a huge oak tree in our small backyard that was termite infested. We had a some quotes & none were less than $400...still too high. So we saved up & bought a small chainsaw -the type that has the extender - and took the tree down piece by piece ourselves. it took about 2 months, largely b/c of our city's ordinance about brush pick up. We had to throw ropes up around the branches to guide them to land in our yard & not the neighbor's...it took dh to cut the branches, the older kids & I to work the ropes and the younger ones to help drag the mess to the curb. Its alot of work, but it can be done.
unfortunately I dont think we can do it ourselves.. its so close to the property line and relatively close to the garage given the size of the tree. the branches HAVE to come down on the neighbours side as they hang WAY over .. I don't think it's something we can do alone at this point. had we taken it down while the house was vacant we could take our time and such, but our neighbour soon puts up a shelter in his yard for the winter in which case we would crush it we've had so many run ins with this neighbour its insane.. everything we do he swears and curses us, so i'm sure if anything happened he would sue us and even if we went through house insurance our deductible is $500 and a claim would cost our premium to go up .. and then the stress involved with that ... would be well over $800 ... i think its something we just have to suck up ... unfortunately ... the company we decided to go with has not left us a written quote yet, so i'm not sure now if we will be going with this one ... they were suppose to drop it off thurs / fri - still nothing ...
