The same thing happened to me only a little more drastic. I was in the midst of showering and doing my hair one afternoon as I had to be at work at 4pm. I was working the 4pm to midnight shift. The door bell rang and it was the postman with a certified letter which required my signature. I signed and opened the letter and it was from my job stating that the company had officially closed. I was shocked. No job/no savings and we were to be paid at the end of the week. I did not recieve that pay check for years later.
1.) RUN TO THE BANK AND CASH THOSE CHECKS. IF THE COMPANY IS IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE AND YOU WAIT ON CASHING THE CHECKS THEN YOU MIGHT NOT GET A PENNY OF THAT MONEY.
2.) Apply, apply, apply to as many jobs as possible, as soon as possible. Go online (monster.com) and other websites and look for jobs as well as the newspapers/newsletters etc.
3.) TELL EVERYONE (neighbors, church members, association members) that your husband is looking for a job. Networking is the best way to get a job.
4.) Call your creditors and explain that you have lost your income to apply for deferrments. I am specifically speaking of student loans.
5.) Closely analyze and trim your budget.
6.) Pray-pray-pray and get others praying with you.
I am sending up a prayer for you!!!

Thank you ladies!
The checks are okay, we deposited them yesterday. Luckily my daycare kids will be back next week, and I have a new one starting (part time), so that will help. I guess we've been through worse, and we wll make it. Thank you for all of the prayers, and good wishes.

I know it feels awful right now but remember this is not a layoff, as soon as some work comes in they will put him back to work. My guess is they will have something soon becuase I am sure the boss will be looking hard! And hay like me, it could always turn out for the better.

Not sure how unemployment works in FL, but in NJ I know my aunt is able to file for unemployment when she is off for Christmas vacation and Easter. She works as an aide at a school but she is not salary so if she doesn't work she doesn't get paid. So she always files and at least receives a little something when she is out of work, even though it may only be a week or two. Also, please forgive me for being stupid, but if his employer said not to come in and he is not working, can't that be considered a temporary layoff?
Good luck and I am sorry about your situation, sending good thoughts and a prayer your way.Mom to:

Well Julie have your husband move over in that rubber laft. DH got a call from our major general contractor on friday and the 2 week job we were suppose to start on Monday was been scrubbed. We we're really looking forward to this job as it was our first large one since October.
Oh, well. More down time.
