Default OMG... I just want to scream!!!

Ok this is the first time I have posted here.. but I just can't take it anymore. I mean just when I think things are going well and we are getting ahead and paying things off something major happens!!! Well my major that happened is that we had water back up into the basement from a broken pipe in the drain. I mean we have one of those old limestone basements.. the house was built in 1880. And its always damp down there but this time we had over 7 inches in there and it killed the furnance and the hot water heater yikessss...Well we turn it into our house insurance which we have been paying on for 6 years over 2 grand a year... with no claims and they have the nerve to say the pipe broken isn't inside the house so they won't cover it.. omg its like 6 grand to fix the broken pipe.... replace the furnace and the hot water heater and put them up on cinder blocks so we would really have to have alot of water to kill them again .... what do i do??? I just don't have 6 grand ... but I need a furnace too .. I mean right now I am heating a 3 bedroom house which i have blankets in the doorways and only heating two rooms with space heaters. Which we don't have to run too much right now but come on!!!! I need the hot water heater really bad!!!!! thats 550 dollars right there which with my son graduating in may i don't have the extra cash for that either.. I just want to scream and rage... smack my head against the wall .. I JUST DON"T KNOW WHERE THE MONEY IS COMING FROM!!!!!

First off - ((HUGS)) to you - you really need them I am so sorry that all of this is mounting up like this. I would go back through an appeal process with the insurance the company and keep doing it until the pay for something. In the mean time, look around for things you can sell for quick cash. Also if you have a Habitat for Humanity in your area, they may have a water heater they can hook up with for a lower cost or perhaps look for a used one to hold you over. Check on the internet for other resources in your area to help with other issues until you get back on feet (ie: food, gas, electric cost, etc....). If you or partner work - try for some overtime or even sell your plasma to get by on - every little helps. I just wish you so much luck and you are in the right place!

I am sooo sorry this is happening to you right now but I agree with going through an appeal process with the insurance company, the water pipe IS part of the house without it nothing works and it should be covered. I would be calling the heck out of them and even those higher up.

Until then, breath, I mean things will work out, maybe IF you have to pay for this yourself you can sell of some things to help pay for it, or maybe you can work some type of payment arrangements up with the company if you explain your situation. Let us know how things turn out and hugs to you

    Default Fight them

They are trying to use the excuse it being a drain pipe to keep from paying if you don't fight them they might get away with it.I too have big old house, 1897, but in very good shape. My house insurance is only $600 a yr. that includes a shed and contents of house and shed.I've had claims from hail damage on my roof and siding they paid without saying a thing. It could have helped that it is a local insurance company and I've known the agent since I was a little kid ,my parents had insurance with him too.During the flood of 93 I worked for an older couple taking care of the husband.Their basement wall had a small hole under the paneling that from all the rain it flooded the whole basement. They didn't have flood insurance so she told him she thought someone left the water hose on outside on the patio. He knew better he even told me I know it wasn't the hose but all this rain that caused it.He paid for replacing everything that was damaged without saying a word to her. That basement was fancy it had almost everything that was upstairs livingroom,familyroom,kitchen,2 bedrooms, laundry, only one bathroom tho ,there were 3 upstairs.I think alot of insurance companies anymore are greedy and try to get away without paying anything.

If the problem is outside the house, then you might check to see if the problem lies with the water supplier, ie: the city or county. If it was a city pipe that broke, then the city should pay for that part, while your insurance pays for damage inside the house. If you live in the country and have rural water, then they should pay. If you are on a well, however, that could be bad news.

I would also suggest contacting your state attorney general and filing a report on the insurance company. I have had to do this before, and the AG really went to bat for us.

Finally, I am so sorry you are having to put up with this. Try to stay as calm as you can while you deal with the powers that be.

Yes, I would appeal this. This insurance company is hoping you will go away so they won't have to shell out any money.

Stay calm things will work out just maybe not the way you think they should. My mom had a broken water pipe once and it was not fun but the cost to fix it was not as bad as what she was first told. Hang in there and definately vent if you need to.

    So sorry Wendy,
    You're getting wonderful advice here.

*big hug* I know exactly where you are coming from. Last October, I came home from work to find my livingroom ceiling had collapsed. We had some pretty good storms here in Missouri and apparently there was a hole in the roof we weren't aware of. Water had collected on top of the insulation and it finally just fell thru. It did over $10,000 worth of damage.

At first the insurance company didn't want to cover the roof at all because they stated whoever put the roof on, didn't do it correctly. We had bought the house two years ago and we called them and they came out to check the place before insuring it. When I was told they didn't want to pay for it, I contacted the main company and told them I was under the impression I was paying to have the whole house covered, not just the parts they wanted to pay for. Well, they finally agreed to pay for half. Thought I was going to have to accept it and figure a way to get the money for the other half.

Well, we kept calling roofers and they either wanted a crazy amount to do just half of it or they wouldn't even consider doing it because it would be a waste of time since the whole roof was bad. Well..... I finally called the insurance adjuster crying one day because I was stuck thru the winter with $300 - $400 electric bills, couldn't find a contractor.... He finally helped us find one and then agreed to do the entire roof!!!

It pays to complain. Don't let them get by with it.... you pay your premiums... I think they just wait to see who they can bluff into letting things drop.

    *hugs*

    Debbie

Just wanted to let you know that we are still without a furnance... its warmer here and haven't had to turn on the heater in like 3 days. They have been trying to dig up where the pipe is broken because the plumber thinks when rural water came through our pasture it broke out pipe but it didn't cuase a problem till now .. sigh didn't know that could happen but Mike(hubby) knows one of the guys at rural water and he said it wouldnt' be the first time. They (rural water) has to be there when they dig up the pipe and if they are the ones who broke the pipe they said they would cover the damage.. not sure if they mean just fixing and replacing the pipe or the furnance and hot water heater too. Oh and the hot water heater the top heating element still works and you can wash your hair and your body but thats it!!! Then its ice cold so brrr.. its quick showers for everyone at my house. And since it has been raining for almost a week now they can't dig up the pipe so we are just waiting for the weather to cooperate. keep your fingers crossed.. and today me and my insurance agent are having a talk.
