Any Big Love Fans?
I'm totally hooked on this show.
For those of you who don't watch, HBO describes the show thusly...
Think having three wives is a dream come true? Find out how Bill Henrickson, a modern-day Utah polygamist who lives in suburban Salt Lake City balances his three wives, seven children, and a mounting avalanche of debt and demands.
I've got CBG hooked on the show too. We just finished Season 1 on DVD and are 1/2 way thru season 2.
Anyone else hooked? Who is your favorite character?

I know I shouldn't but I also love Big Love. I think it is so realistic on a life like that would be. I had HBO for the first season but missed the second. I now have it on my computer and am trying to catch up.

I really like Big Love. I know they're flds, but in a broader sense they're an honest poly family, and you don't get much (any??) of that on tv.
I sometimes get upset with all the "behind each other's back"ing between the adults, but, eh, there probably wouldn't be any entertainment without it!
My fave character is Margene, because she reminds me of me, good hearted, just finding her place in things, the one who tries to keep everyone happy and together -- and sometimes a little daft, lol.
I love Bill's mom, too, she's hilarious!

I watched that show a few times with my husband, and honestly everything about it just gives me the heebie jeebies.
I do like Bill's mom though.~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.~

Right now, Adalene (nicki's mom) is my favorite character...she cracks me up. I think Lois (bill's mom) is awesome too. And Wanda (bill's brother's wife) is hilarious...she's just soo C.R.A.Z.Y.!!
My least favorite character has to be Rhonda...that girl is nothing but trouble!

It's funny...critics of the show often say it glorifies polygamy but I think those critics don't watch the show. You have kids not getting the one on one attention they need (sarah & ben), jealousy amongst the wives, major secret keeping, mounting debt...
Not exactly glorious sounding, is it?
I think the show is more realistic about suburban polygamy. It's not easy or simple but it can be rewarding at times.
At least that's how I imagine it would be.
I found this article about real suburban polygamists to be interesting...

I can't believe how much I love BIG LOVE! I heard about it on the radio, it sounded strangely interesting, so we ordered it from netflix. I didn't think I would be so hooked! Even dh got into it! And we don't usually watch anything other than movies and sports. I don't know how I am going to wait for season 3 to come out on DVD, I just might have to order HBO! lol!
I have to say, Wanda is my favorite!

I love the idea of it...the sense of community and shared values but THERE IS NO WAY ON EARTH I COULD HANDLE MY HUSBAND BEING IN LOVE/LOVING SOMEONE ELSE.

I completely forgot about Wanda! I love her. Bringing Lois' gun right into the courthouse under the baby because she thought Lois was going to kill the DA (and everyone else thought Wanda was going to kill the DA) and just handing it to Bill out in the open, lol. She cracks me up.
I just wanted to say, at the risk of openning myself up for something, I have lived the "lifestyle." This show is sensationalized, I hate the amount of non communication that goes on between the adults and the ignoring of the kids' life. It's not like the show much at all, really, at least it wasn't for me. These relationships take a lot of work, when you add another partner the number of relationships compounds exponentially. So take all the work, understanding, frustration, etc etc and mutiply it -- but there are also exponential rewards (support, group parenting, pooling incomes.) Bill and his wives don't talk enough, imo.
DH and I were hurt extremely bad by a person we thought was our lifelong partner (we even had a "marriage", a commitment ceremony) so it's just the two of us now, and I think it will always just be the two of us because we're sick of trusting people. I like the community of it all, the family unit. I believe it can work, if the right people get together, but I've seen more relationships fall apart than stay togther long term (but really, this goes for most couples I know, too) -- but I do know a few polyfidelitous (many loves, one commitment) families who have made it last the years. For practical reasons, part of why I think it can be great is because kids have more caring adults around to turn to (not everyone has oodles of kids) and a group even better rounds out skills just a couple may not possess.
As for jealousy, I will say it takes unique personalities to cope embark on something like this. Openhearted and open minded, willing to honestly confront negative emotions as a group effort and find what's behind them There is a word called compersion, meaning seeing your partner happy, even with another partner, brings you joy as well. Love is love is love to me, and I've loved our partners, no matter who they were bonking. They've said it on the show -- the women are not just married to Bill, they are married to each other.
Oh lord, please don't jump on me. I'm fragile today. It's just a different type of relationship, same problems, same joys, honestly, and it's certainly not for everyone.
