Me...sorta. I was a vegan for 5 months of so at the end of 2009 through the beginning of 2010.
My New Year's Resolution is to go back to being vegan. Currently I am using up the last of the non-vegan stuff in my pantry/fridge/freezer. It should be another week until I'm out of those foods.
Glad there are some vegans here!Meredith

Add me to the list.
I'm having a hard time finding vegan recipes that aren't loaded with crap that I don't want (salt, sugar, flour, processed junk). So for the most part, I'm eating very basic meals (which is fine). I'm going to go through some of my cookbooks at home and see which recipes I can veganize.
Quick question. I want to invest in a juicer. It just seems easier for me to juice up some vegetables (and occasional fruit for that matter) rather than eat so many of them.
Anyway, so I'm torn between getting a vitamix or a breville juicer since they're really different, yet both can create drinkable produce. Clearly the juicer is cheaper, but is it less healthy because of the pulp being left behind? Or is the vitamix less healthy because of the heat from the motor? I know, I'm being obsessive, but they are both high cost investments and while I know a vitamix can do MORE than the juicer, the increased price tag makes me wonder.
I currently make smoothies in my cheapie blender. And I already own a food processor, too.If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online. Sara,
I just saw this. I don't know if you've already made your purchase or not, but I thought I'd throw in my .02. I currently have a VitaMix and I love it! The heat from the motor does not affect my smoothies at all. They aren't in there long enough. Food is still raw up to 113 degrees, I believe. I do use some frozen fruit in mine, and they always come out cold still.
I like having the pulp/fiber from the whole fruit. But a friend has a juicer and loves it just as much as I love my VitaMix

I am about 95% vegetarian, mostly for health and economy reasons. I won't eat meat from grocery stores but I will from neighbors who hunt deer and raise cows.
I love animals but I have no illusions about saving them all. A deer who is not killed by a hunter, is not going to live a long life and then die peacefully in the forest surrounded by his family. He is going to die in some other lousy way.
Also, just the act of cultivating land to grow crops kills millions of animals.
What I find interesting is looking back at some old (1970's) veg. cookbooks I have, and how HORRIBLE most of the recipes are. They don't sound appetizing at ALL. And then you pick up a modern cooking magazine and the recipes look great. Wonder why it took them so long.
