Thank you so much Rhiamon for all those references. It's a bit overwhelming at the moment but I'm sure we will get there eventually!

I don't think I've posted this before. If I have sorry. I searched my post and didn't see it. My son who is 13 has ADHD. he was around 11 when we had him tested. He also has apraxia of speech. and sensory issues. He takes ritalin. the generic form of it and it works well. they tried him on a couple of other meds and he was mean on them. we let him off the meds here and there. he only takes 30 mg and by lunch it is wore off. That is fine with us. (I home school him) for the most part we are done by lunch. I don't like to give him meds but if he doesn't take them sometimes he can't control his behavior. During the summer we usually let him take the summer off. TC

Thanks Sophia for your post. We go back to the specialist in May to work out meds etc. so will be interested to see what the doctor recommends and what ends up working for him.

The diagnosis has definitely changed how I react to him, no yelling at him now when he doesn't do what I ask him the first time, has to be a good thing!

I hope things go well for you. When my ds was younger he never sit to eat. when we would go out to eat we would just move the chair and he was happy standing to eat. He use to run circles to do spelling. I've learned a lot over the years with him. We use to do all the brushing and swing and joint compressions with him. He has out grown all of that. He didn't sleep all night till he was 6 years old. he was in our room till he was nearly 6 then went in with his brother and has only been in his room for 2 years now. TC

Finding out your child has a cute little label can be scary for several reasons. What is it? what does this mean now? Meds? Diets? etc My 19 year old dd is ADHD she was diagnosed at age 5 she is also Anti-social as well as has some OCD issues as well . Let me tell you that was tons of fun..Not!! She would get angry destroy classrooms or run away from daycare's...The biggest tips I have to share is what helped me...What works for family A will Not work for Family B etc... everyone is different..

Listen to your child and keep records (documentation at age 5 seems crazy but when they are 10 are you going to remember all the meds and side effects and DR names etc....be your child's biggest advocate and don't settle for half a** help from Dr/Teacher's/etc

Meds- Can help but sometimes the side effects are crazy as well remember to document...

Don't get angry at them try to see what you can do to make things better for both of you..They are upset you get upset and you both get no where....

My dd was on meds until the age of 12 she decided to try it 1 year with no meds...and she has never been back on them..I keep weekly reports with teachers and didn't put up with crap if my dd had issues we took care of Asap... She graduated from HS last year and is enrolled in college doing very well.
