GOSH...I am learning so MUCH from you all~!
THANK YOU~!
btw~YES...I found out what I bought on my card that I have linked with amazon. I bought a couple books that I thought were free....and obviously didn't catch it quick enough..or I would have called and cancelled the purchase.~
I'm going to have to really watch that kind of stuff.~but I swear the price was free when I clicked on it...but how do you prove it?? Not going to happen...I'll just be WAY more careful.
At least one of the 2 books I bought was a crockpot cookbook~! Not something dumb like social media..or something like that~but you can bet I'm going to have to make a couple meals out of that cookbook. It just really annoys me..because I'm sure I could get the same recipe at allrecipes.~!Last edited by CrazyCat; 01-18-2012 at 01:45 PM. Reason: additional comment

It's trickier now with the free Prime books. Watch for the prime symbol by the price. It will have the non-prime price in smaller, lighter type below it. That's annoying, but just be aware of it. It seems to me that the actual price for non-prime members should be equally obvious.
Another thing that may have happened - were you clicking through to Amazon from a site that lists free books? It could be that their list had not been updated and the price had changed since they listed it. Some of the free books are only free for a very short time, a day or probably even less.
Yesterday I was going to recommend here a free short story I got a couple of days earlier, but I checked and the price had already bounced back up, so I didn't. Prices are very volatile on Amazon - even for non-books. I've had items parked in my cart to remember them that I wasn't actually ready to buy yet, and the price has gone up and down, up and down. Crazy.Donna

I also wonder if you clicked on the prime BORROW for free button and you had already borrowed your one free that month. I have been to nervous to try that one out.
Anyone know how those buttons work? What if you have already borrowed your one free on that month?
Now I have used the BUY for free button several times and those have always been free."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you meet has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

Just sent a document from the net (drivers test manual for Buddy) to our Kindle. Now he can read and study it on the Kindle at his leisure. Learner's permit soon to be had.

Imagine..isn't that wonderful??
I have to wrap my mind around this new technology. ~
It's just amazing to me what we can do now. ~
I've not seen the borrow for free button...I'm going to have to pay very close attention from now on.
I've bought my one book for free with prime..but I'm anxious to get the other one..and I don't know how that works. ~because I registered at the end of December...the month of December I got my free book..and should have been eligible for another free one in January. But if that was the case..I don't know why they charged me for the cookbook. Must research this further~!

Yes, you should be eligible for one for January, because I got one around Dec 28th or so, and again in early January.
Are you doing it through your Kindle? It can't be borrowed via the computer. I think the "borrow" icon only appears when you are shopping on the Kindle. But I've only done it a couple of times too.Donna

Don't forget that many public libraries also now allow you to check out books on your kindle.
I let my library membership lapse for a while after a bad experience with a book I got there (I'm a bit of a germ-o-phobe, and I opened a library book that had a huge stain in which three hairs were embedded---couldn't bring myself to get another book for years)...anyway, just last week, renewed membership at my local library AND found that I'm able to check out books on my kindle.
I just hit the "check out with Kindle" button, and I'm directed to Amazon where the book is sent (wi-fi only, not 3g) to the kindle or you have the option to download it to your computer and transfer it to the kindle via USB. This is how I did it since I have the didn't have wi-fi access at that moment.
I just started checking out books this way, so I'm not sure what happens once my borrowing period is up, I guess the book disappears from my kindle at that point. But this is just one more major perk to Kindle ownership. And from what I read on the library's faq page, you can do this if you just have the kindle app, you don't have to have the actual reader.

imagine - hmmm. I didn't know that if you order through the Kindle it asks if you want to read it now. Interesting. I don't like shopping on the Kindle though the keyboard is so tiny. I guess I'll just keep letting them download and then deleting them from the Kindle once they arrive.
I've downloaded a lot of freebies the last five or six weeks, though a lot of them are short stories that I don't keep once I've read. I guess right now it's a toss up which is my biggest stockpile - yarn or Kindle books. I definitely know which one cost me the most!
woodogmom - I haven't borrowed any from the library yet. I have so many in my queue to read that I just haven't taken the time to search to see what our library has available. I working this year on reading, or at least trying out, lots of my older freebies to delete and move them out of my archive.Donna

library books
I get library books for my kindle. Once the due date expires they are automatically deleted from your kindle. But they are still listed in manage my kindle. I actually click to delete from manage my kindle list when I am done.
Also if you finish the book before the due date you can click return this item from manage my kindle and it releases the book and deletes it from your kindle. I have done this several times because you can only check out 6 books at a time from the library, but returning the book lets you check out more.
Did I mention I love my kindle
You can get anywhere you want to go if you take it one step at a time.....

I'm loving getting books from the library too & it couldn't be easier. Since the 9th our library has offered this service and I have taken out 3 books, returned 2 and am on the waiting list for 3 more. It's easy to search for ebooks and you can specify your search to only those that are available now to borrow, Click click magic zap wifi to my kindle and I've got a book from the library. To "send" it back I just go online to manage my kindle, find the book and click return. I like to read them quickly & return so others can borrow the book. This is what the process is like for my library & many others I think.Tutorial: Kindle Library eBooks, Everything You Need To Know (Video) | The eBook Reader Blog - eReader and Tablet Reviews and News~*Darlene*~
