    Ditto, and have lost many friends to various substances (child of the 70's). I lucked out and got to quit drinking for a different health reason, and think mine was the easy way out. Both programs, incidentally, have greatly inspired CODA, of which I am a long-time member.

    old thread but... me too.

    friend of bill w since 1991. attend al-anon mostly now, for ongoing responsibility for my life.

    I have been lately reading the "debtors anonymous" books again to tighten up personal responsibility, since we are adjusting to a one income living.

    My brother is a friend of Bill W and Jimmy K. I am glad he cleaned up his act, he is looking a lot better, still even though he is my younger brother he looks a lot older than I do. I still think he has a great story to tell, if only I can get him to tell it.

    They have friends here in Finland too. My father has been a friend of Bill W. for 18 years and both my brothers about ten years.

    “When you get to the end of all the light you know
    and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
    faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
    you will be given something solid to stand on,
    or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller

    “Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
    there are signs that the world is speedily
    coming to an end;
    bribery and corruption are common; children no
    longer obey their parents;
    every man wants to write a book and the
    end of the world is evidently approaching.”
    — From a translation of an inscription on
    an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.

    God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
    courage to change the things I can,
    and the wisdom to know the difference

    I'm glad Jimmy K. has so many good friends. Open meetings really helped about 12 years ago while I was wrestling with depression and thoughts of hurting myself. For whatever reason, AlAnon just didn't do anything for me, but the other rooms did.

    Just passed 12 years since the last time I fooled around with hurting myself.

    By the grace of God, I'm not an alcoholic, but my father was and his father, etc. My dh has 26 years of sobriety! My ddil received her 6 month pin,but relapsed last week. (she could use your prayers) It's a tough, uphill battle for sure. I really admire and respect all of you for your hard work and dedication to recovery!

    I prayed for your DIL.

    Recovery from addiction is not an easy road by any means but it certainly can be done. There are millions out there who are proof, me included.

    And what a long, strange trip its been.

PAY THE PEOPLE YOU OWE, pray for the people you owe, and make it right. " hard nosed AA person, thumping his big book, addressed to me in AA meeting 7/30/2013

    I may have the term wrong, maybe I should have said chip? She attends AA meetings, she's also a prescription drug addict, as well. To my knowledge there are no Narc Anon meetings here in our rural area. She could probably benefit from that.
